HOCKLEY, Texas ā The Oklahoma men's golf team dropped a close match in pool play versus No. 5-seeded Baylor, 4-2, at the Big 12 Match Play Championship on Saturday. Half of the day's individual matchesĀ were decided by a single hole, with two of them tied thru 16 holes. The championship, held annually at the par-71, 7,007-yardĀ Golf Club at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas, employs the same match play format that is used to determine the NCAA champion in the spring.
"Just a really tough loss today. You have to give Baylor credit for getting it done when it counted," head coach
Ryan Hybl said. "We didn't have our best stuff this morning, but we still have a big match in front of us to be ready for."
Logan McAllister and
Patrick Welch both improved to 3-0 at the championship, clinching their matches early. McAllister, a junior from Oklahoma City, defeated Ryan Grider 4 and 3 to get the first Sooner victory of the day. Welch followed a hole later, beating Colin Kober by a score of 4 and 2 to give the Sooners an early 2-0 lead.
All-American
Quade Cummins would then drop his match to fellow All-American, Cooper Dossey, 3 and 2, to move the scoreboard to 2-1.
Jonathan Brightwell would get his match versus Johnny Keefer to all square thru 17, but would par the round's final hole while Keefer birdied to win the match, 1-up.
Garett RebandĀ then dropped a close match to Baylor's Brandon Hoff, 1-up, to move the score to 3-2.
Heading into the back nine,
Thomas Johnson trailed by three holes, but the Oklahoma redshirt senior nearly erased the deficit against Trey BoscoĀ but fell 1-up to give the Bears a 4-2 win.
With the loss, the Sooners and Bears move into a tie atop Pool A, with the Bears holding the head-to-head tiebreaker. Baylor (6 pts, 2-0-0) will compete two more times in pool play, versus West Virginia on Saturday afternoon and Iowa State on Sunday morning. Oklahoma (6 pts, 2-1-0) has one match remaining, a Sunday morning showdown with TCU.
The winner of Pool A will play Oklahoma State in the Match Play Championship final on Sunday afternoon.Ā
The Big 12 is the first conference to create its own regular-season match play tournament. The three-day event features pool play from Friday through Sunday morning, followed by the final rounds on Sunday afternoon.
