Mims Earns Big 12 Offensive, Newcomer Honors

NORMAN — Oklahoma wide receiver Marvin Mims was named the Big 12 co-Offensive Player and the Newcomer of the Week after recording 132 receiving yards and two touchdowns on four receptions in the Sooners' 33-14 win at TCU, the league office announced Monday.

A true freshman from Frisco, Texas, Mims had receptions of 10 yards, 50 yards (TD), 11 yards and 61 yards (TD). The 61-yarder was a contested catch and represented OU's longest play from scrimmage of the season.

Mims finished with a career-high 193 all-purpose yards, as he also returned two punts for 42 yards (long of 38) and a kickoff for 19 yards. As a result, he was one of four players named to the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll this week. Mims ranks second nationally among players who have played more than one game with his 17.9 yards per punt return (143 yards on eight returns).

Mims is tied for the Big 12 lead with six receiving touchdowns (no other freshman nationally has more than three) and needs one more to tie the school single-season freshman record. His six receiving TDs are the most by an OU freshman in his first five games, breaking the previous record of four by Ryan Broyles in 2008 and CeeDee Lamb in 2017.

This is the first career weekly Big 12 honor for Mims. OU has garnered five Big 12 honors this season. Quarterback Spencer Rattler was named Newcomer of the Week and kicker Stephen Johnson was named Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 14 while running back T.J. Pledger was named Offensive Player of the Week and David Ugwoegbu was named the Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 12.

Oklahoma (3-2, 2-2 Big 12) travels to Lubbock to face Texas Tech (2-3, 1-3 Big 12) on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on FOX.
