STILLWATER, Okla. – It was Bedlam indeed in Stillwater Wednesday night as the Sooners pulled off a 77-75 upset of Oklahoma State in the final seconds of the game.
With the game tied at 75 with three seconds on the clock,
Madi Williams hit a layup off an in-bounds lob from
Tatum Veitenheimer to lift the Sooners to victory.
OU improves to 8-6 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 play with Wednesday's victory. Oklahoma State moves to 10-4 and 1-1 against the league.
"Unbelievable," said OU head coach
Sherri Coale. "There's nothing I can say that is going to give that game the justice it deserves. It was an unbelievable women's basketball game. Aside from our turning it over 30 times, that's the way women's basketball in the Big 12 Conference is – it's tough.
"(Oklahoma State is) a really good team and I'm so proud of our guys' conviction. Their faith in themselves, their dedication and commitment to the process. They just stayed in it. These guys believed we could win and they were just fantastic and I'm so proud."
After trailing by nine points headed into the fourth quarter, the Sooners used a 14-point run to close the gap. It was Williams who hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 75, then laid the ball in off the glass to seal the win.
"The play was designed to get a layup," said Williams. "So when the time came, we just had to get a layup …We had the mentality we weren't going to lose the game. We played great defense and the fact that we could get stops and some of the shots were falling coming down the stretch gave us that boost."
Robertson led all players with 25 points as she went 9-for-14 from the field and 7-for-11 from the beyond the arc. Robertson's 25 points were good for her sixth straight game with 20+, tying teammate
Ana Llanusa for the school record for most consecutive 20-point games.
Llanusa had 20 points to go with four steals. Joining Llanusa and Robertson in double figures were Williams with 18 and
Gabby Gregory with 10.
Mandy Simpson anchored the Sooners defense that held Cowgirl All-American Vivian Gray to 7-for-26 shooting in the contest. The Boise, Idaho, product pulled down 11 rebounds and added three assists and three steals.
"It's the stuff that's not going to be in the stats sheet," said Coale of Simpson. "That's how you win games – you do your job and control your plot of ground and she did that all night against greater size and athleticism. I just though Mandy played fundamental basketball and did her job, and when five kids do their job you win."
OU handed Oklahoma State its first loss to an unranked opponent this season and earned its first win in Stillwater since 2017.
"Bedlam is always just a special contest and I think to come from behind the way we did to win it added to it," said Coale.
