Sooners Hold Top Spot After Opening Weekend

NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's gymnastics team posted the best opening weekend score in the nation to earn a No. 1 ranking this week. The Sooners were the only team in the country to reach the 197 mark as they posted a 197.350 in the first meet of the year.

OU holds the No. 1 spot on bars (49.550) and the No. 2 spot on vault (49.200), beam (49.225) and floor (49.375).

For the first time in conference history, the Big 12 boasts the top two teams in the nation. Just behind the Sooners is Denver who earned the No. 2 ranking with a 196.700. UCLA (196.575), Utah (196.425) and Cal (196.200) round out the top five.

Eight Sooners earned 19 individual national rankings this weekend with at least one OU gymnast ranked in the top five on vault, bars, floor and the all-around. All six who competed on bars are ranked nationally, while four are ranked on floor.

Senior Maggie Nichols is ranked in the top five on bars, floor and the all-around. Nichols holds the No. 1 spot on bars (9.975), the No. 2 spot in the all-around (39.625) and the No. 4 spot on floor (9.925). Junior Anastasia Webb is also ranked in the top 10 in the all-around at No. 6 (39.525). Freshman Ragan Smith sits in 12th in the all-around with a 39.275.

Webb holds the No. 2 spot on vault with a 9.9, while junior Evy Schoepfer comes in at No. 13 (9.850).

On bars, Smith ranks No. 2 (9.95) with Webb also in the top 10 at No. 8 (9.9). Senior Jade Degouveia (No. 12 – 9.875), junior Jordan Draper (No. 17 – 9.850) and junior Karrie Thomas (No. 22 – 9.825) round out the Sooners ranked on bars.

On beam, Smith leads the team with a No. 7 ranking (9.9). Nichols and Thomas are tied for 19th with a 9.850.

Along with Nichols, Webb (No. 6 – 9.9), Degouveia (No. 15 – 9.875) and sophomore Emma LaPinta (No. 23 – 9.85) are all ranked on floor.

The Sooners will travel to No. 14 Arizona State Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. CT matchup. The meet is slated to air on ESPNU.
