Big 12 Play Tips Saturday

NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's basketball team opens 2020 and Big 12 action Saturday as it hosts No. 6/6 Baylor. The game will tip at 4 p.m. CT inside Lloyd Noble Center following the OU men's basketball game against Kansas State, set for 12 p.m. CT.

The contest will be broadcast on Fox Sports Oklahoma with Chad McKee and Dan Huges on the call. In Norman and Oklahoma City, the game will air on the Sooner Radio Network with Brian Brinkley calling the action.

Saturday's game will also include a teddy bear toss at halftime. Fans are encouraged to bring stuffed animals to be donated to local hospitals and will be asked to throw them on the court for collection at the half.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

•  The Sooners return to the court after a 13-day hiatus to open Big 12 play Saturday with No. 6/6 Baylor at 4 p.m. CT inside Lloyd Noble Center. OU has won 13 out of its last 14 Big 12 home openers and is 20-3 in its conference opener under Sherri Coale. The Sooners are 240-144 all-time against Big 12 foes.

•  Saturday's contest will be a clash between two of the Big 12's top three scoring offenses. Baylor leads the league and the nation with an average 89.00 points per game. The Sooners' scoring offense averages 82.91 points per game to rank third in the Big 12 and 15th nationally. OU has eclipsed the 90-point mark in three of its last four contests. 

•  Sophomore guard Taylor Robertson has become the NCAA's active career leader in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting 47.4% (168-for-353), just 12 games into her second season of college basketball. She is also the active career leader in treys per game with a 4.00 average. Robertson is the youngest member of both 10-player lists; the nine other players on each are juniors and seniors. 

•  Averaging 19.92 points per game, Robertson ranks second in the Big 12 in scoring. Ana Llanusa is fourth at 17.83 points per game. OU is one of just three teams in the league to have two players averaging 15 or more points per contest and is the only team to have two players averaging 18 or more. 

•  OU leads the Big 12 from beyond the arc, sitting atop the league's rankings for made 3s (109), 3-point field goal percentage (.389) and 3-point attempts (280). Robertson accounts for more than half (63) of the Sooners' buckets from deep.

GAME 12 RECAP: No. 2/2 UConn 97, OU 53

The Sooners' three-game winning streak was snapped as OU fell to No. 2 UConn 97-53 in the Hall of Fame Women's Basketball Showcase on Dec. 22.

The Huskies' Olivia Nelson-Ododa led all players with 27 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocks. Megan Walker added 17 points and 15 rebounds for the Huskies. Crystal Dangerfield finished with 19 points.

Sophomore guard Taylor Robertson led the Sooners with 24 points to mark her fourth consecutive game with 20 or more points. Robertson hit seven 3-pointers in the contest and added four rebounds, a block and a steal. Ana Llanusa joined Robertson in double figures with 11 points and Madi Williams pulled down eight rebounds on the day.

PREVIEWING NO. 6/6 BAYLOR

The reigning national champion Lady Bears enter Saturday's matchup ranked No. 6 in the AP and Coaches' Polls. Baylor is 10-1 on the year with its sole loss to then-No. 5/6 South Carolina 74-59 at the 2019 U.S. Virgin Island Paradise Jam on Nov. 30.

In its last contest, Baylor flew past Morehead State 94-47 in Waco to push its home winning streak to 47 games. The Lady Bears' NaLyssa Smith had a career-high 25 points for her third 20-point game this season and added 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the year. Lauren Cox returned to the starting lineup after missing the last eight game and added 10 points and four blocks.

Baylor's Juicy Landrum set the NCAA-, Big 12- and Baylor- single-game 3-point record against Arkansas State on Dec. 18 as she hit 14 treys. Landrum poured in 42 points in that contest.

Four Lady Bears are averaging points in double figures headed into league play: Smith accounts for 16..7; Queen Egbo averages 14.4 and a team-high 8.4 rebounds per game; Te'a Cooper is averaging 12.4 points per game; and Landrum accounts for 11.5.

Additionally, Egbo ranks second among Big 12 players in field goal percentage at 61.1% (69-for-113) and Cooper is the conference leader in assists with 5.36 per game. Didi Richards is first in steals (30) and steals per game (2.73).

Baylor leads the all-time series 29-26 and is 9-1 in the last 10 matchups.

DUNBAR JOINS WBB ROSTER

Ashlynn Dunbar, who was previously a member of the Oklahoma volleyball team, has joined the women's basketball squad. Dunbar will be immediately eligible to play for the Sooners and will have one remaining year of eligibility for the 2020-21 season.

A standout on the volleyball court, Dunbar joins the basketball roster after a wildly successful 2019-20 campaign as an outside hitter for the Sooners and coach Lindsey Gray-Walton. Dunbar was an All-Southwest Region and All-Big 12 First Team selection as she led the squad to its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2015.

The Seabrook, Texas, product played basketball at Clear Falls High School where she three-time First Team All-District and two-time First Team All-County honoree. Dunbar was also a three-time recipient of her district's Offensive Most Valuable Player award and was named the district's defensive MVP in 2014-15. As a senior in 2015-16, Dunbar was the McDonalds Classic Tournament MVP and a Greater Houston Area Girls Basketball Association All-Star.

Prior to her arrival in Norman in August 2019, Dunbar spent three years at San Diego State University, where she played volleyball.

TOP OF THE LEAGUE

Two Sooners rank in the top five in scoring among Big 12 players. Taylor Robertson is averaging 19.92 points per game to check in at No. 2 and Ana Llanusa is fourth with 17.83 per contest.

Oklahoma is one of three schools in the conference to have two players averaging 15 points or more; Oklahoma State's Vivian Gray (19.33 PPG) and Natasha Mack (16.58 PPG) and Texas Tech's Brittany Brewer (16.36) and Alexis Tucker (15.91) are the only other duos to do so. OU is the only school with two players averaging more than 18 points per game.

Robertson has played more minutes than any other Big 12 player, totaling 434 for an average 36.15 per game. The sophomore has played all 40 minutes in four contests this season, most recently at UConn on Dec. 22.  

T-ROB TREY TRACKER

Robertson is the national leader in made 3s with 63 this season – she has hit 15 more treys than the next closest player, Rachel Childress of UAB, who has made 48. Robertson is shooting 49.2% (63-for-128) from deep this season.

The McPherson, Kan., product also leads the country in 3s per game (5.25) this season. She is averaging the most 3s per game of any player in men's or women's Division I basketball; Dru Kuxhausen of McNeese is the men's 3s per game leader and is averaging 4.50. Robertson is also averaging more 3s per game and a better 3-point field goal percentage (49.1%) than the leading NBA player; James Harden (Houston) accounts for 5.20 per game and is shooting 38.3% from deep.

Robertson leads the Big 12 in 3-pointers this season (63), more than double than the next closest players; Jacyee Bradley (TCU), Kysre Gondrezick (West Virginia) and Christianna Car (Kansas State) have hit 28 apiece.   

As a team, OU has hit a league-high 109 3-pointers this season; Robertson accounts for more than half of those. Robertson has made more treys than 115 teams in DI women's basketball this season.

Of Robertson's 239 total points this season, 189 have come from behind the 3-point line. 30 have come from the charity stripe where she is 30-for-35 (85.7%); just 20 of Robertson's points have not been 3s or free throws.

Additionally, Robertson's nine made 3s at Wichita State tie for the third most in a single game in women's Division I basketball this season and are one shy of the men's 2019-20 Division I single game record of 10.

SHOOTERS SHOOT

OU ranks in the top five among Big 12 teams in three offensive categories. The Sooners are first in 3-point field goals (109) and 3-point field goal percentage (38.9%); third in scoring offense (80.42 points per game); and fourth in field goal percentage (44.1%).

With 109 treys, the Sooners lead the conference in made 3-pointers by 31; the next closest team is Iowa State with 78 on a .315 clip.

The Oklahoma scoring offense (80.42 points per game) ranks third in the Big 12. The Sooners rank 15th nationally in the same category. The Sooners have scored the second-most points by a Big 12 team this season with 965; only Baylor has scored more with 979.

Oklahoma checks in at 13th nationally in 3s per game with 9.1 and ranks third in the Power Five in that category. OU's 3-point field goal percentage (39.8%) stacks up at 11th nationally and fourth among Power Five teams.

Taylor Robertson leads the OU offense with 19.9 points per game and has scored 20-plus points in each of the Sooners' last four games.

QUICK HITS

  • OU wrapped up the non-conference slate at 7-5 overall, 6-1 at home, 0-3 on the road and 0-1 in neutral site contests.
     
  • The meeting with No. 6 Baylor will be OU's third meeting with a ranked opponent this season. OU is 1-1 against ranked teams after defeating then-No. 25 LSU 90-68 on Dec. 7 and falling to No. 2 UConn 97-53 on Dec. 22.
     
  • OU is the only team in the Big 12 without a senior on its roster. The Sooners will be one of two league teams (Texas Tech) that will return three players who averaged at least 10.0 points per game. Llanusa (18.3), Robertson (14.3) and Williams (11.6) all averaged scoring in double figures during the 2018-19 season.
     
  • At 496-269 in her career, Coale is just four wins away from the 500th victory. Only 76 coaches have accumulated at least 500 wins in their careers in the history of Division I women's basketball.
