Sooners to Honor Mayfield at 2020 Diamond Dinner

NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma baseball preseason Diamond Dinner is set for Saturday, Feb. 1 at the NCED Hotel and Conference Center in Norman. Head coach Skip Johnson announced that former OU infielder Jack Mayfield will be recognized as the team's honoree at the 17th annual Diamond Dinner.

The event begins at 7 p.m. Tickets, which cost $50 per person, must be purchased in advance by contacting Ryan Gaines in the OU baseball office at 405-325-8354 or by email at rgaines@ou.edu. Tickets can also be purchased by clicking HERE, where the official flier can be printed and returned to the OU baseball office.

The Diamond Dinner, held two weeks prior to opening day, is the first opportunity of the year for fans and community members to be introduced to the 2020 Sooners. The event is open to the public. All attendees must register ahead of time, as walk-up sales will not be available.

Mayfield and current Oklahoma baseball student-athletes and alumni will be available for an autograph session during the event. Attendees will also be the first to see a video preview of the 2020 baseball season as well as have the opportunity to bid on exclusive items in a silent auction.

An infielder at Oklahoma from 2010-13, Mayfield signed with the Houston Astros as an undrafted free agent in 2013 and made his Major League debut with the club last spring. He appeared in 26 games for the Astros, recording 10 hits (five doubles, two home runs), five RBIs and eight runs scored.

Mayfield was a starter on OU's 2012 and 2013 Super Regional teams, accounting for 134 hits, 10 home runs, 29 doubles, four triples, 69 RBIs, 98 runs scored and 17 stolen bases over those two seasons. In 2010 and 2011, Mayfield served as a utility infielder and pitcher, posting a 5-1 record, 2.88 ERA and three saves in 28 appearances and four starts over the two seasons.

A Del Rio, Texas, product, Mayfield earned Honorable Mention All-Big 12 in 2013 while starting all 64 games at shortstop. In 2012 he started 65 of 66 games at second base and was named to the Charlottesville All-Regional Team and the Big 12 All-Tournament Team. He hit safely in 33 of the last 41 games of that season, including seven multiple-hit games and an eight-game hitting streak.

As a freshman at OU in 2010, Mayfield went 5-0 with a 2.47 ERA in 17 appearances and three starts over 43.2 innings on the mound and tallied two doubles and six RBIs in 34 at bats, earning second-team All-Big 12 honors as a utility player. He earned the victory with 3.1 relief innings against Virginia in the second game of the Super Regional, and the Sooners clinched a berth in the College World Series the next day. He also pitched a complete game shutout against Oklahoma State on Sunday to clinch the Bedlam Series that season.

In 2011, Mayfield was credited with three saves in 11 appearances and 22.0 innings on the mound as a sophomore and totaled four extra base hits and 10 RBIs in 58 at bats. He received the program's inaugural Mitchell Whitaker Award in 2011.

Under third-year head coach Skip Johnson, the Sooners return 20 players and feature 17 newcomers for the 2020 season. Of the 20 returning players, six are seniors, nine are juniors, four are sophomores and one is a redshirt freshman.

Season tickets for the 2020 OU baseball season are on sale. Season packages range from $180 to $300 for the 29-game home schedule at L. Dale Mitchell Park, and can be purchased online or by contacting the OU Athletics Ticket Office by phone at (800) 456-GoOU (4668).

Oklahoma opens the 2020 season Feb. 14-16 against Virginia in Pensacola, Fla., and opens its home schedule Feb. 18-19 against Texas Southern at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
