January 27, 2020 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN –  The Sooners are set to host Texas Tuesday night in the first Red River meeting of the season. The game will tip at 7 p.m. CT inside Lloyd Noble Center.

ON THE AIR

The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Oklahoma with Chad McKee on play-by-play and Brydon Manzer as the analyst. In Norman and Oklahoma City, the game will air on KREF 99.3 FM/1400 AM in Norman and KOKC 1520 AM in Oklahoma City (Tune In Radio App) with Chris Plank on the call.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

•  The OU women's basketball team is home for the first time in three games on Tuesday as it hosts Texas. The Red River matchup will tip at 7 p.m. CT inside Lloyd Noble Center. Texas leads the all-timer series between the teams 33-25, but OU holds a 15-11 edge in Norman.

•  OU will look to avenge a road loss to Kansas State in its last outing. The Sooners fell to the Wildcats 92-74 Saturday in Manhattan.

• The nation's leading 3-point shooter Taylor Robertson has moved into third place on OU's singleseason record list as she has hit 97 this season. Robertson made 105 treys as a freshman last season, placing her second on the all-time list. The Kansas product is currently averaging 5.11 3s per game and is well on pace to shatter the program single-season record of 115 set by Aaryn Ellenberg in 2012-13.

•   OU junior Mandy Simpson has stepped up her inside game as a rebounder. At the beginning of December, the junior averaged 4.0 rebounds per game; at the beginning of January, Simpson had boosted her average to 5.7. Headed into Tuesday's contest, Simpson is averaging 6.4 rebounds per game on the season and 8.6 during Big 12 play.

•  Head coach Sherri Coale will look for her 500th career victory as the Sooners head to Manhattan. Coale is 499-273 in her 24th year at the helm for OU. Coale was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016.

GAME 19 RECAP: KANSAS STATE 92, OU 74

The Sooners dropped to Kansas State 92-74 Saturday in Manhattan. Three K-State players scored 20 points or more as Peyton Williams led all players with 24; Ayoka Lee had 23 points and 20 rebounds; and Angela Harris scored 20. Kansas State out-shot OU 48.5% to 38.0% from the field.

Madi Williams led OU in scoring with 20 points and added four rebounds, two steals and two assists. Gabby Gregory had 15 points and was one board shy of a double-double with nine, which was good for the team high. Taylor Robertson chipped in 13 points but was held to just 3-for-12 shooting from the field.

Aspen Williston saw a career-high 21 minutes and matched her career-best with nine points. The Broken Bow, Okla., native added a steal and a block in the effort.

The Sooners took an early lead in the first quarter, but Kansas State took a four-point lead into halftime. The Wildcats used an 11-0 run in the third to gain separation and OU was unable to bring the game within fewer than eight points.

PREVIEWING TEXAS

The Longhorns come to Norman at 13-6 overall and 5-2 against the Big 12. Texas is coming off a 61-56 win over Oklahoma State Saturday in Stillwater.

Down by six points with six minutes left in the game, Texas went on a 10-0 run, and then played shutdown defense in the last two minutes to take out the Cowgirls.

Three Texas players are averaging points in double figures. Joyner Holmes accounts for 14.1 points per game and 9.0 rebounds. Charlie Collier is averaging a double-double at 13.9 points and 10.5 rebounds. Sug Sutton accounts for 11.6 points each contest.

A solid rebounding team, Texas' +9.32 rebounding margin ranks second in the Big 12. The Longhorns average 43.53 rebounds per contest while holding opponents to 34.21.

COALE GOES FOR NO. 500

A win Tuesday would make 500 for head coach Sherri Coale, who is in her 24th season at the helm for the Sooners. Coale is the winningest coach in program history at 499-272 (.648).

Coale has led the Sooners to 19 NCAA Tournament appearances in 20 years, three Final Fours and nine Sweet 16 appearances since 2000.

A four-time Big 12 Coach of the Year, Coale has also coached the Sooners to four Big 12 postseason titles and mentored 13 All-Americans, six Big 12 Players of the Year and seven Big 12 Freshmen of the Year.

14 OU players have been WNBA Draft Picks, six of them first-round selections, following their careers under Coale.

The Healdton, Okla., native was inducted into the Women's College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016.

Just 72 coaches in Division I women's basketball have earned 500 or more wins in their careers. Just 33 of those are active coaches. 196 in men's and women's Division I basketball, including 60 of those active, have reached the milestone.

BOARDS COME DOWN, STATS TREND UP

Since December, junior forward Mandy Simpson has stepped up her game inside as a rebounder. At the beginning of December, the junior averaged 4.0 rebounds per game; at the beginning of January, Simpson had boosted her average to 5.7.

Headed into Tuesday's contest, Simpson is averaging 6.4 rebounds per game this season and has pulled down at least five boards in each of the last five contests, including a career-high 12 against Baylor on Jan. 4 and 11 each at Oklahoma State (Jan. 8) and West Virginia (Jan. 15).

Simpson did it all at Texas Tech (Jan. 22), pulling down nine boards to go with a career-high 19 points on 7-for-9 shooting and adding six assists. Simpson is averaging 8.6 rebounds per game in Big 12 play and ranks seventh among players in the league in that category.

T-ROB TREY TRACKER

Sophomore Taylor Robertson is the NCAA's active career leader in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting 45.6% (202-for-443), halfway through her second season of college basketball. She is also the active career leader in treys per game with a 4.12 average; the next closest player, Rachel Childress of UAB, has averaged 3.32 per game. Robertson is the youngest member of both 10-player lists; the nine other players on each are juniors and seniors.

Robertson is the national leader in made 3s with 97 this season. The sophomore is shooting 44.4% (97-for-218) from deep.

With an average 5.11 3s per game this season, the McPherson, Kan., product also leads the country in that category and leads by a mile; Childress of UAB is also the next closest player and she is averaging 3.80 per game.  Robertson is averaging the most 3s per game of any player in men's or women's Division I basketball; Dru Kuxhausen (McNeese) is the men's 3s per game leader and is averaging 4.30.

Robertson leads the Big 12 in 3-pointers this season (97), 53 more than the next closest player: TCU's Kianna Ray has hit 44 this season.
As a team, OU has made a league-high 166 3-pointers this season; Robertson accounts for more than half of those.

Of Robertson's 392 total points this season, 291 have come from behind the 3-point line. 67 have come from the charity stripe where she is 67-for-76 (88.2%); just 34 of Robertson's points all season have not been 3s or free throws.

Additionally, Robertson's nine made 3s at Wichita State tie for the third most in a single game in women's Division I basketball this season and are one shy of the men's 2019-20 Division I single game record of 10.

Robertson moved into third on OU's single season made 3-pointers record list with 97 on the year. As a freshman in 2018-19, Robertson poured in 105 3-pointers to rank second on that list. Should Robertson continue to average 5.28 treys per game, she is on pace to shatter her own record as well as leader Aaryn Ellenberg's mark of 115 in a season (2012-13).

SHOOTERS SHOOT

OU has proven its prowess from long range this season with the Sooners shooting 37.7% (166-for-440) from beyond the arc to rank second in the Big 12 in that category and rank ninth nationally.

With 159 made treys, the Sooners lead the conference in made 3-pointers by 27; the next closest team is Iowa State with 132.

OU is tied for 13th nationally with San Jose State in made treys (166) and 14th nationally in 3s per game with 8.7.

Sharpshooter Taylor Robertson accounts for 97of OU's 166 3-pointers this season – 58.4% of the Sooners' buckets from deep have come from Robertson.
