RALEIGH, N.C. – The Oklahoma women's tennis team flew past Rice 4-2 Sunday in the ITA Kickoff consolation match.
With the win, OU improves to 1-1 on the season and Rice moves to 0-2.
OU opened the match with the doubles point for the second match. The Corley sisters struck first, rolling past Rice's Michaela Haet and Linda Huang 6-0 at the top spot.
OU's No. 27 Jasmine Asghar and Oleksandra Korashvili fell to No. 37 Priya Niezgoda and Anastasia Smirnova 6-2 on court two.
That left court three to decide the point. The Sooners' duo of Martina Capurro and Camila Romero never trailed in their match with Maria Budin and Diae El Jardi to win 6-4 and clinch the opening point for OU.
In singles, Korashvili rolled past Niezgoa, 6-2, 6-1 on court four to push OU's lead to 2-0.
Carmen Corley fell to Victoria Smirnova 6-4, 6-2, but OU quickly answered when No. 87 Capurro notched 6-3, 6-3 victory over Haet at the top spot and the Sooners went up 3-1 in the match.
Podlinska took No. 86 Anastasia Smirnova to a third set tiebreaker on court three, but ultimately fell 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (5).
Romero clinched the 4-2 win for the Sooners with a 6-3, 6-3 rout of Huang on court five.
When play was abandoned, Ivana Corley was up 5-4 in her second set with Rice's Anna Bowtell. Bowtell took the opening stanza 6-2.
The Sooners will host Oral Roberts and UMKC on Feb. 2 in a doubleheader home opener. OU will take on Oral Roberts at 10:30 a.m., followed by UMKC at 2 p.m.
