NORMAN — University of Oklahoma head football coach Lincoln Riley announced Monday that wide receiver Theo Howard has signed a financial aid agreement with OU and has enrolled and is attending classes. A graduate transfer from UCLA, Howard will participate in spring practice and will have one season of eligibility with the Sooners.
Ā
Howard, who graduated in December with a degree in political science, played in 34 career games at UCLA, compiling 119 catches for 1,359 yards and nine touchdowns. He started 24 games as a Bruin, including 23 of 26 during the 2017-19 seasons. Howard battled injuries in 2019 and played in just one game, a start vs. Oklahoma in Pasadena. The OU contest snapped his 28-game streak of registering at least one catch.
Ā
As a freshman in 2016, Howard, who is from Westlake Village, Calif., played in eight games (one start) and caught 12 passes for 88 yards with one touchdown. He blossomed as a sophomore in 2017, starting 10 of 13 contests and finishing with 56 receptions for 594 yards and four TDs.
Ā
His production continued as a junior in 2018 when he started all 12 games and registered 51 catches for 677 yards (second most on team) and four scores to earn honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors by league coaches. Against the Sooners in Norman that season, he caught two passes for 53 yards, one of them a 45-yarder.
Ā
Howard cracked the 100-yard mark twice as a Bruin and recorded at least 80 yards on six occasions. He caught eight passes for a career-high 119 yards and a touchdown vs. Kansas State in the 2017 Cactus Bowl and pulled in seven passes for 110 yards and a score vs. Hawai'i earlier that season. He also made a career-high 11 receptions for 81 yards at USC as a sophomore.
Ā
Howard also rushed five times in his UCLA career, gaining 26 yards (5.2 average).
Ā
Named to the UCLA Athletic Director's Honor Roll on two occasions, Howard was a consensus four-star recruit out of Westlake High School. He was rated as the nation's No. 5 receiver by Rivals and was No. 7 by Scout. Rivals also ranked him as the nation's No. 38 overall player.
Ā
Howard, who was born in Maryland, was a Cal-Hi second-team all-state selection and was selected to play in the Semper Fidelis All-America Bowl Game. As a high school senior, he caught 60 passes for 959 yards and nine touchdowns en route to being named All-Ventura County Offensive Player of the Year.
