COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The No. 2 Oklahoma men's gymnastics team won its season opener Saturday night at the Rocky Mountain Open on the campus of the U.S. Air Force Academy.
The Sooners topped No. 5 Nebraska, No. 6 Minnesota, No. 13 Air Force and No. 17 Washington with a final tally of 409.900. With the victory, OU claimed it's 20th Rocky Mountain Open title in the past 21 editions of the meet. Additionally, head coach Mark Williams eclipsed the 500-win mark with four wins at the meet to move to 502 career victories.
"I'm happy with the way we competed," said Williams. "We started off well. I think we've made a lot of progress since the beginning of school. It makes me feel more confident about our possibilities going forward.
"I'm excited for the future and guys stepping up, especially when we left guys at home and our amount of new guys. I'm happy with the results."
OU won five of six events as a team on the night, taking three of the six collegiate event titles and junior Alexei Vernyi finished first among NCAA gymnasts in the all-around with a career-high tally of 81.300. OU swept the collegiate all-around podium with junior Gage Dyer taking second (career-high 80.850) and freshman David Sandro (79.350) placing third.
Sophomore Vitaliy Guimaraes picked up where he left off after his All-America campaign as a freshman. Guimaraes won or took a share of three collegiate event titles, scoring 14.500 on floor, 13.800 on rings and 14.700 on vault.
Dyer shared the best NCAA score on floor (14.500) with Guimaraes and tied for first among collegiate gymnasts on high bar with a 13.900. The junior also took third on parallel bars, registering a 13.850.
The Sooners got off to a solid start in the first rotation on parallel bars with a 68.000. Dyer led the squad with his third-place score of 13.850. Sandro, performing his first collegiate routine, helped OU with a 13.650. Additionally, Vernyi (13.550) and sophomore Spencer Goodell (13.450) registered career highs in the rotation.
Heading to high bar in the second rotation, OU notched a 66.650 to take their second team event title, led by Dyer's 13.900. Sandro continued his hot start with a 13.350, while Guimaraes recorded his first career high of the meet with a 13.300.
The third rotation on floor proved to be a meet-changer for the Sooners. OU scored a meet-best 71.500, its first 70-plus event score of the season. Five of six Sooners went 14-plus, led by Guimaraes' and Dyer's 14.500s. Sophomore Morgan Seyler upped his career high with a 14.050, while Vernyi chipped in a 14.350.
Pommel horse in the fourth rotation for the Sooners was the only event of the meet they did not win as a team, recording a 65.300 to Nebraska's 67.650. Redshirt freshman Braden Collier stepped up for Oklahoma in his first routine as a Sooner, putting up a team-high 13.650. The score was good for a tie of third at the meet.
On still rings in the fifth rotation, all six OU gymnasts recorded scores of 13.050 or higher, with two Sooners putting up career bests. Guimaraes led the team with a meet-best 13.800, while Vernyi's 13.700 was good for second. The two tallies were career highs for the juniors. Senior rings specialist Collyn Kellogg, competing in his first meet since 2018, scored a 13.500 which was good for third among collegiate gymnasts.
The Sooners were tied with the Huskers at 338.850 going into the final rotation. OU headed to vault where they put up another meet-best score, recording a 71.050 to take the Rocky Mountain title following the Huskers' 64.700 on rings. Four of six Sooners notched scores of 14-plus, led by Guimaraes' meet-winning 14.700.

Oklahoma continues its road swing to start the 2020 season with a trip to Columbus, Ohio, to take on the No. 9 Buckeyes and No. 14 Arizona State inside the brand new Covelli Center on the campus of OSU. Last season, the Sooners topped the Buckeyes in Norman by a score of 423.950-395.400. It was OU's third-highest point total on the year.
