Sooners Finish Seventh in Schooner

NORMAN – Oklahoma women's golf took seventh place at the Schooner Fall Classic by carding an 853 (+13) at the par-70, 6,048-yard Belmar Golf Club in Norman on Sunday. Sophomore Mikhaela Fortuna led the Sooners by tying for seventh in the field of 81 individuals.
Playing in their only home event of the season, the Sooners shot a 296 (+16) in the final round. No. 2 Texas won the event with an 838 (-2) while Tristyn Nowlin (Illinois) and Frida Kinhult (Florida State) split medalist honors by each shooting a 207 (-3).
"Today was tough for us," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "We played so well the last two days but had trouble closing. We typically play our best when we have fun and play more relaxed. I believe this weekend will be a great learning lesson to take into our next event."
Fortuna fired a 209 (-1) in the 54-hole event to claim her first collegiate top-10 finish. The Sophomore shot a 68 (-2) and 67 (-3) in the opening two rounds to weather a 74 (+4) on Sunday.
Norman native Kaitlin Milligan joined Fortuna in the top 10 with a 210 (E). Milligan has claimed a top-20 placement in 11 of her last 13 tournaments.
Junior Sydney Youngblood took 45th with a 218 (+8) followed by sophomore Libby Winans (220, +10) in 53rd and freshman Maria Fernanda Martinez (222, +12) in 59th.
In addition to the five Sooners in the lineup, Oklahoma had three individuals competing throughout the weekend. Junior Hannah Lee led the trio with a 217 (+7) to tie for 38th. Senior Ellen Secor tied for 59th and freshman Linley Ooi tied for 66th.
Oklahoma is back in action on Oct 7 and 8 in Chicago for the Illini Women's Invitational.
