NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team swept TCU Wednesday night to open Big 12 play in statement fashion.
OU (9-3, 1-0 Big 12) ousted the Horned Frogs (5-6, 0-1 Big 12) 25-17, 25-17, 25-23 to remain undefeated (5-0) inside McCasland Field House this season.
"This feels great," said head coach Lindsey Gray-Walton. "We talked about it in the locker room before the match that there is the two parts of the season that you are guaranteed. The second part starts now; everyone is 0-0 on the big board. I am really impressed on how we came out in a sense of urgency to execute the assignment, the game plan and attack our moment to get the W."
OU put on a show, swinging .248 with 42 kills on the contest. Ashlynn Dunbar led the team with 13 while Sarah Maras chipped in eight.
Setter Kylee McLaughlin did it all, dishing out 31 assists while adding seven digs. The junior tallied seven kills to match her season-high, registering a .455 clip in the match.
The Sooners' dominant defense held TCU to .073, OU's lowest opponent hitting percentage this season. Oklahoma out-blocked TCU 7.0-5.0 and out-dug the Horned Frogs 57-51. Keyton Kinley had a team- and match-high 16 digs on the night.
OU came out firing in the first set to take an early 6-2 lead. TCU came within striking distance at 8-7, but the Sooners used kills from Dunbar and Paige Anderson to gain separation. A six-point run by OU closed out the frame, with Maras clinching it with a kill.
A back-and-forth second set saw ties up to 9-9 before a McLaughlin solo block gave OU the edge, and the Sooners maintained the lead from there to win the set 25-17.
TCU fired back in the final set, tying the frame at 20-all. Anderson brought up match point at 24-21 with her fifth kill of the night, but the Horned Frogs would score two more points in the contest. A kill by middle blocker Brianna Kadiku sealed the deal for the Sooners.
OU takes its first Big 12 road trip Saturday as it heads to West Virginia. First serve against the Mountaineers is set for 1 p.m. CT.
