The Hurry-Up: Vol 4

August 16, 2019 | Football

NORMAN – Preseason camp is winding down for the Oklahoma football team, and students are returning to campus for the start of the fall semester on Monday. The fourth edition of The Hurry-Up highlights wide receiver Lee Morris, defensive lineman Ronnie Perkins and safety Chanse Sylvie.

Redshirt Senior WR Lee Morris

What are you working on in camp to try to get better and prepare for the season?
"Camp has been going pretty good. I've had some mistakes here and there, but I'm fixing them and working on the little things: route-running and hand placement for blocking. Those are the main two things I'm working on just so I can get better separation in routes and be effective in the run game for our team."

Has anything stood out to you in camp from the receivers or team as a whole?
"Receiver-wise, I would say the young guys. Austin Stogner, Trejan Bridges, Jadon Haselwood, Theo Wease – they're all showing big improvements from spring and showing that they're ready to make an impact right away in the season. Team-wise, we're building. There are some new faces around the team, and we're just reloading for the new season."

What are you looking forward to the most with this upcoming season, your last?
"Obviously this is my last one, so I'm going to cherish every moment. That first game, there's nothing like it. Usually everyone is pumped up because it's been (nine) months without football and everyone is dying to get back out there in Memorial Stadium. That's one I'm going to cherish. Then, just all the little things throughout the journey. Just on this team. I'm going to enjoy them and I'm going to miss them obviously when the season is over, but I'm going to cherish them while I have them."

Do you have a favorite moment or favorite game from your career at OU to this point?
"Probably the FAU game (last year). That was the game that ended up putting me on scholarship. Also, the blocked punt. I've seen that multiple times in college football and in the pros, but to be out there blocking a punt, that's an experience I'll never forget."

Sophomore DL Ronnie Perkins

What are your personal goals for this season?
"I definitely want to have a bigger impact on the game this year. I look forward to playing in this new defense. I feel like this defense will definitely help me showcase my talents and showcase my athleticism."

What does Speed D mean in your words?
"'Speed D' means no slow people on the field. We always need all fast people on the field and fast guys getting to the ball. We're really concentrating on full effort every down from everyone on the field. We're going to play a lot faster this year and I think that's going to help us be a better defense and team."

Who have been some of the leaders on the defensive line so far in camp?
"On the D-line, guys like Neville (Gallimore), Dillon (Faamatau) and K. Mann (Kenneth Mann). I feel like they do a good job of not only bringing up the D-line but bringing up the whole defense. They're always talking us up after a bad play. With their experience, they give off a lot of wisdom to the younger guys and the rest of the defense."

What are your expectations for the defensive line this season?
"I feel like we're definitely a way better defensive line than last year. I think we're going to make a whole lot more plays this year and I think we're going to have the ability to take over a lot of games this year and help this team win a whole lot of games. That's the goal."

Redshirt Junior S Chanse Sylvie

Have you focused on anything specific this offseason?
"Through the offseason I just mostly worked on my Achilles'. I've always been a strong person, always been able to lift and squat, so I just focused on my Achilles' and my ankle, and focused on aspects of my game. Working on my Achilles', getting with Coach (Bennie) Wylie, getting stretched out, getting it stretched out, getting in the sand pit, working on ankle mobility and ankle strength, just trying to improve myself. That's one thing I've been working on in the offseason. Otherwise just improving my game every day, working on the little things, learning the defense, working on the progression of my steps and working on my technique each and every day."

What are you looking forward to the most about getting back on the field?
"Just playing the game of football. I've missed it. I missed being out there with my guys. It's one thing to lift 24/7, but to actually get out there and play the game of football, that's one thing I miss. I enjoy getting on the field and being under the lights and being able to just watch the ball and be able to make plays."

Have you viewed your injury as an opportunity to grow, and do you think you have become better as a result of the process?
"I became better mentally through injury. I had never been injured before in my life. That was my first time being injured, so I was fighting through that. That sophomore year I was fighting for a starting job and had football taken away from me for a year by hurting my Achilles'. That was a hard thing to do. It was tough, especially in the spring time. I tried to find the little things and do little things on my own outside of OU. One area in which I've grown from my injury is mental stability. It can always be worse. The game can always be taken away at any given time, so just enjoy the moments I have now."

Are you enjoying this opportunity to play football again after your injury ?
"My freshman year going through camp, you think, 'Man this is so long,' but you find a way through it. This year, knowing that I've had football taken away from me, I enjoy it. I actually enjoy camp. I enjoy being out on the field and learning from the coaches and playing football. Once the game is taken away from you, you realize how much you miss it. So you just learn to enjoy the game."
