WICHITA, Kan. – The No. 1/1 Oklahoma softball team set a program record with its 32nd straight win on Wednesday night, run-ruling Wichita State 8-0 at Wilkins Stadium.
The Sooners' winning streak passed the previous school-record mark that was achieved from April 2, 2016 to June 7, 2016. It marks the third time in school annals that OU has strung together 30 straight wins and the seventh instance of 20 straight. Additionally, it stands as the longest active streak in Division I softball.
On the year, Oklahoma (42-2, 12-0 Big 12) has run-ruled 22 opponents and shut out 20.
"These players are road warriors, they really are," OU head coach Patty Gasso said. "All parts of our game were working. It's not easy getting off a bus and playing, but I wouldn't do it unless I thought they could be ready for the game, and they played it just like they would a conference game."
The Sooner offense was propelled by three home runs in the midweek contest. Jocelyn Alo hit two, her fifth career game with multiple home runs. She also doubled to finish 3-for-3 on the day with five RBIs and two runs.
Sydney Romero crushed the 50th home run of her career in the top of the fourth, a two-run shot over the left-field wall. She is now tied with Keilani Ricketts for the fifth-most career homers in program history.
In the circle, Mariah Lopez improved to 15-1 on the year with her seventh shutout of the season. She scattered two hits over 5.0 innings while striking out seven.
Alo's first homer of the day put Oklahoma on the board. After Falepolima Aviu drew a walk and Caleigh Clifton doubled, Alo drilled the ball over the center-field wall.
Aviu drew another walk to lead off the third, and Alo doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Grace Green then sent the first pitch she saw up the middle to drive in Aviu.
Lynnsie Elam hit her second single of the day to left field in the fourth inning. Romero then drilled the 16th home run of her senior season to grow OU's lead to six.
Clifton opened up the fifth inning with a single before Alo drilled her second homer to center.
Up next, the Sooners head to Ames, Iowa, on Friday-Sunday for three games at Iowa State.
