CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Oklahoma men's gymnastics team advanced to Saturday's team final of the 2019 NCAA Championships after winning the second preliminary session on Friday night, putting up a team score of 419.191. It marks the 20th consecutive season under head coach Mark Williams that the Sooners have advanced to the team finals at the NCAA Championships.

The No. 1 Sooners moved on to Saturday's championship as one of the top three teams in its prelim, along with No. 4 Illinois and No. 5 Penn State.

The Sooners claimed four of six top team event scores. Recently crowned Nissen-Emery winner Yul Moldauer took home the top tallies on still rings and parallel bars, while freshman Vitaliy Guimares registered the vault score in the Sooners' prelim.

OU will go for its fifth consecutive and 13th overall national title tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. CT versus the Illini, Nittany Lions and No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 Michigan and No. 7 Nebraska. The Cardinal, Wolverines and Huskers advanced out of today's afternoon preliminary.

The team finals on Saturday night will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.

As the designated one seed, Oklahoma chose to go Olympic order in their rotations, beginning on floor exercise.

The Sooners tallied a 70.399 in the first rotation, the first of their four 70-plus event scores on the evening. Three of five OU gymnasts scored above a 14.000, led by freshman Vitaliy Guimares' 14.500.

Moving to pommel horse in the second rotation, OU topped their season average on the apparatus with a score of 67.699. Moldauer led the team with a 14.300 set, while senior horse specialist Brian Schibler contributed with a season-high 13.800.

In the third rotation, OU tallied its second 70-plus event score of the evening, scoring 70.898 on still rings. Moldauer registered his first prelim-high with a stuck 15.033. The tally is the top score out of all events to this point at the championships and the only routine to top 15.000. Seniors Peter Daggett and Jake Maloley chipped in respective totals of 14.600 and 14.166.

On vault in the fourth rotation, four of five Oklahoma gymnasts scored above 14.000 for the second consecutive event to tally a team total of 72.031. Guimaraes put up the best prelim vault score with a 14.766 in the leadoff spot for the Sooners.

OU scored 70.033 on parallel bars in the fifth rotation, led by Moldauer's qualifier-best 14.733. Junior Matt Wenske and Daggett notched scores of 14.200 and 14.100, respectively, to help the Sooners go 70-plus for the fourth event of the evening.

The Sooners closed the meet on high bar, recording a 68.131. Senior co-captains Genki Suzuki and Anderson capped the rotation with respective routines of 13.933 and 13.866 to help OU advance to the NCAA team finals for the 20th straight year.

Oklahoma will compete Olympic order tomorrow evening in the championships as the team recorded the highest score of all teams that advanced to the finals.
