NORMAN – Junior shortstop Brandon Zaragoza drove in four runs and scored twice to lead the Oklahoma baseball team to two wins by scores of 9-0 and 6-2 Saturday, completing a four-game weekend sweep of Columbia at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

With the four wins, the Sooners improved to 11-1 on the season and 9-0 at home. OU pitching limited the Lions (0-4) to just six runs over the four-game series.

“It's tough to play in that (cold) environment, but our players showed a lot of pride and they played pitch to pitch,” Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. “We talk about playing against the ball. When you're winning games and you go into the last game, you never know what's going to happen. They take the 2-1 lead, and (Ben) Abram pitched with some pride and the next three outs were really fast. We calmed down, got patient and took advantage of some mishaps and got a big hit.”

In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, sophomore outfielder Tanner Tredaway went 3-for-4 and Zaragoza went 2-for-4, and each drove in two runs and scored two runs. Sophomore catcher Justin Mitchell went 3-for-5, drove in a run and scored a run.

Leading 3-0, the Sooners added four runs in the sixth and two in the seventh inning to reach the 9-0 final. Sophomore Levi Prater (2-1) tossed 6.0 shutout innings, and freshmen Wyatt Olds and Jaret Godman tossed the final three innings to close out the game. It was OU's third shutout of the season.

In the finale, Columbia took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, but Oklahoma moved in front for good with five runs in the fifth and sixth innings on its way to the 6-2 win. Freshman Ben Abram was very good in his start once again, pitching 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts, and allowing two runs on five hits and no walks. Zaragoza drove in two runs while sophomore outfielder Jordan Vujovich, junior first baseman Tyler Hardman and junior catcher Brady Lindsly each had one RBI.

“The baserunning was good and the defensive play was good,” Johnson said summing up the weekend. “Throwing strikes when we had to throw strikes and getting outs when we had to was big, and getting quality at bats at times that we needed them was even bigger.”

In the first game Saturday, Tredaway doubled home freshman left fielder Diego Muniz in the fourth inning to give Oklahoma a 2-0 lead after a balk scored a run in the first. Sophomore designated hitter Cade Cavalli singled home Mitchell in the fifth to make it 3-0.

The Sooners scored on four consecutive at bats in the sixth inning, as Zaragoza singled, senior third baseman Brylie Ware doubled, Mitchell singled and Hardman hit a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 7-0. In the seventh, Tredaway hit an RBI triple down the line in right and Zaragoza singled him home to make it 9-0.

For the fourth straight game, Oklahoma scored in the first inning of game two on Saturday, as Hardman hit an RBI single to score Vujovich. Columbia took its first lead of the weekend in the fourth inning when first baseman AJ DiFillipo tripled to the gap in right center to score two runs. Abram responded with a strikeout to end the inning, and retired the final seven batters of his outing.

Zaragoza came through with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth put the Sooners back in the lead, 3-2. OU added to its lead in the sixth when Tredaway walked and scored on a single by Lindsly. Vujovich doubled to drive home Lindsly and junior second baseman Conor McKenna scored on a wild pitch to make the lead 6-2.

Columbia starter Ben Wereski (0-1) allowed two runs in 4.0 innings and took the loss in game one, while Sean Higgins (0-1) allowed three runs in 4.1 frames in the game two loss.

The Sooners are on the road for the next four games, beginning with a contest at Dallas Baptist Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
