ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Freshman Ben Abram pitched six strong innings, first baseman Tyler Hardman drove in two runs and designated hitter Cade Cavalli doubled twice as the 25th-ranked Oklahoma baseball team defeated New Mexico 8-1 Tuesday at Santa Ana Star Field.

The Sooners (17-4) broke open the game with a four-run sixth that extended the lead to 7-1. Six of OU's 11 hits were doubles and four players collected two hits. Abram (5-0) allowed a run on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks. UNM starter Tristin Lively (1-1) took the loss for the Lobos (11-8).

“Ben was outstanding. He stayed with it pitch to pitch,” Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. “He got in a little bit of trouble in the fourth, but he stayed with the plan. The defense played great. We really had some quality, quality at bats early in the game. It was beautiful to see. It was really fun to watch from the offensive side, executing when we needed to execute.”

Cavalli doubled home left fielder Jordan Vujovich in the first inning to give the Sooners a quick 1-0 lead. OU extended the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. S Vujovich base hit plated second baseman Conor McKenna. Center fielder Brady Harlan then scored on a fielder's choice by shortstop Brandon Zaragoza to make it 3-0. Vujovich went 2-for-4 with two walks and two runs, and Harlan walked five times in five plate appearances.

The Lobos scored in the bottom of the fourth on a bases-loaded walk to cut the lead to 3-1. Abram retired the next two batters, ending the inning with a strikeout to strand the bases loaded. He then sat UNM down in order in the fifth and faced the minimum in the sixth, completing a 3-6-1 double play and earning his fourth strikeout of the game.

Hardman started the scoring in the sixth inning by driving a bases-loaded two-run double to left field. A wild pitch scored third baseman Brylie Ware and an errant throw back toward the plate allowed Hardman to cross safely and make the score 7-1.

Cavalli knocked his second double of the game with one out in the eighth inning. Pinch runner Luke Price then scored on McKenna's line drive base hit into center field to reach the 8-1 tally.

The Sooners and Lobos play again at 1 p.m. CT Wednesday. The game was moved up one hour from the originally scheduled 2 p.m. CT start.
