ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Second baseman Conor McKenna went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and junior Jason Ruffcorn earned his fourth save of the season to lead the 25th-ranked Oklahoma baseball team to an 8-6 win over New Mexico Wednesday afternoon at Santa Ana Star Field.

The Sooners (18-4) scored three runs in the first inning and led 8-0 in the seventh, then withstood a comeback by the Lobos (11-9) to hang on for the victory. Freshman Jaret Godman (2-0) pitched 3.1 scoreless innings and earned the win and Ruffcorn closed out the final 1.1 frames to pick up the save.

McKenna's two-run double in the top of the seventh extended Oklahoma's lead to 8-0 and provided the difference-making runs for the Sooners. Designated hitter Cade Cavalli went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored two runs, and center fielder Brady Harlan drove in two runs.

“Early in the game we had some really good at bats,” Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. “Jaret was really good, but he kind of ran out of gas because he's not a starter. Ryan (Madden) came in and did well, but he ran out of gas. Then we didn't get an out that's given to us, and they got a big hit. When that happens, you give the momentum back to the other team. Wyatt (Olds) came in and did a great job. It was really good to put Ruff in that situation, because he hasn't been in that situation since the first weekend. He pitched under pressure and made some big outs, especially in the last inning against some really good hitters.”

The Sooners jumped on the board quickly with three runs in the top of the first. McKenna was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Harlan followed with a two-run single up the middle. In the fourth, shortstop Brandon Zaragoza drove a double down the left field line to score right fielder Tanner Tredaway and extend the lead to 4-0. Cavalli doubled home first baseman Tyler Hardman in the fifth inning, then scored on a groundout by third baseman Diego Muniz to make it 6-0.

New Mexico cut the lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by catcher Ediberto Reyes and a three-run home run by first baseman Derek Marshall. The Lobos added two runs in the eighth on a groundout by Reyes and a base hit by left fielder Brayden Merritt that made the score 8-6.

Ruffcorn entered the game with two runners on base and two outs in the eighth inning. He ended the eighth with a groundout and worked around a leadoff single in the ninth with three ground ball outs. Senior Ryan Madden was effective in 2.2 frames in relief of Godman and freshman Wyatt Olds got the first two outs of the eighth inning with two runners on base.

Oklahoma totaled 11 hits for the third straight game, running its streak of games with double digit hits to eight. UNM starter Jack Murano (1-1) took the loss for the Lobos.

The Sooners open Big 12 play this weekend against Kansas at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Game times are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday, 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
