NORMAN – Sophomore Levi Prater struck out a career-high 15 batters over 7.0 innings and sophomore Cade Cavalli hit a two-run home run to lead the Oklahoma baseball team to a 6-1 win over Missouri State Sunday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Sooners won the series over the Bears and improved to 16-4 on the season. Prater (4-1) is the first OU pitcher since 1999 to strike out 15 batters in a game. He allowed only one hit, one walk and two hit batters. Logan Wiley (0-4) took the loss for Missouri State (5-13).
Cavalli's third home run of the season and second in as many days made the score 5-1 in the seventh inning. He was one of five Sooners with two hits in the game, as OU reached double-digit knocks for the sixth straight game with 11 hits on Sunday.
“It was good to see Levi pitch in control of himself,” Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. “He was a lot like that last week too. He was locating pitches and really had his changeup, his breaking ball and his fastball command. It was fun to watch.”
Oklahoma took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when junior catcher Brady Lindsly slammed a double off the right field wall and scored on a base hit by junior center fielder Brady Harlan. After the solo home run by MSU catcher Logan Geha in the top of the fourth, OU took the lead again in the bottom half on sophomore right fielder Jordan Vujovich's RBI groundout.
Junior second baseman Conor McKenna, who went 2-for-3 in the game, doubled home a run in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 3-1. Sophomore first baseman Tyler Hardman went 2-for-4 and scored runs on McKenna's double and Cavalli's home run. In the eighth, senior third baseman Brylie Ware shot a double to the right field corner scoring junior shortstop Brandon Zaragoza to make it 6-1.
Prater struck out five straight batters from the end of the first through the start of the third inning. He pitched three strikeouts following the leadoff home run in the fourth, and struck out the final five batters he faced, including the side in the seventh. Aside from the home run, no other runner reached second base against him.
Prater had pitched 17 straight scoreless innings before that home run. He has allowed one run in 20 innings over his last three starts. His 15 strikeouts tie for the fourth-most in school history. The last OU pitcher to strike out 15 batters in a game was Jared Hoerman in 1999 against Central Oklahoma. Jackson Todd also struck out 15 batters in seven innings against LSU in 1972.
The Sooners travel to Albuquerque, N.M., for a pair of midweek games at New Mexico this week. Game times are scheduled for 7 p.m. CT Tuesday and 2 p.m. CT Wednesday.
