NORMAN – Nathan Wiles pitched 7.0 strong innings and designated hitter Cade Cavalli and catcher Brady Lindsly each drove in three runs to lead the Oklahoma baseball team to an 11-2 win over Missouri State Saturday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Wiles struck out nine batters and allowed two runs on four hits and a walk to improve to 4-0 on the season. Lindsly went 3-for-4 with a two-run triple in the second inning that helped open a 5-1 lead. Cavalli, who was 3-for-5 and scored three runs, hit a three-run home run in the fourth to make it 8-2. The Sooners (15-4) evened the series with the Bears (5-12), with the rubber game set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
“The separator in the game was Cavalli's home run,” Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. “He put a really good swing on it. It was a pivotal that we could separate the game there and really stay with it. Nate fought through the (fourth) inning where they got one run and he made some really quality pitches. We talked about playing nine innings today and those guys came out and played nine innings. It was a breath of fresh air to see that.”
In OU's five-run second inning, Lindsly tripled into the right center field gap to score two runs, then raced home on a wild pitch to quickly put the Sooners ahead 3-1. Shortstop Brandon Zaragoza then drew a bases-loaded walk and third baseman Brylie Ware made it 5-1 with a sacrifice fly. Cavalli hit his second home run of the season, a three-run shot in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 8-2.
Second baseman Conor McKenna, who made all three plays in the top half of the seventh including a diving stop for the second out, tripled to start the bottom of the seventh. He scored on center fielder Brady Harlan's base hit to left center to make the score 9-2. Lindsly and McKenna hit consecutive RBI singles in the bottom of the eighth to drive home the 11-2 victory.
Missouri State took a 1-0 lead on solo home run by catcher Drew Millas in the top of the first. Wiles retired the next six batters, then stranded two runners in the third inning. The Bears cut the OU lead to 5-2 in the fourth on a double by left fielder Logan Geha.
Wiles retired the final 11 batters he faced after the fourth-inning double. Wyatt Olds, Zack Matthews and Ryan Madden closed out the game. Madden pitched a perfect ninth inning, his eighth straight scoreless inning this season.
