PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – In its first day of action at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, the No. 4/4 Oklahoma softball team shut out BYU 5-0 before falling to No. 2/2 UCLA 7-1 on Friday night at Big League Dreams Sports Park.

Junior pitcher Giselle Juarez led Oklahoma in game one, striking out 14 of the 21 batters she faced. Her 14 strikeouts were good for her most as a Sooner. Overall, Juarez allowed just two hits over 6.0 innings of work.

Classmate Parker Conrad closed out the final inning, fanning two and allowing one hit to combine on the shutout.

At the plate, Sydney Romero finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored, setting season highs for hits and runs. She also drove in one run.

Shay Knighten and Grace Green also had multi-hit games, finishing with two apiece.

The Sooners got on the board early with a run in the top of the first. Romero, Knighten and Green strung together three two-out singles as Green's hit brought Romero home.

In the fifth, OU doubled its lead as Romero scored on a wild pitch.

Oklahoma broke the game open in the sixth, scoring three runs. After a pinch-hit double by Eliyah Flores, Nicole Mendes singled up the middle to bring her teammate home.

The next batter up, Romero singled to right center to score Mendes. Romero would later score on wild pitch for the second time.

In the nightcap, Fale Aviu gave Oklahoma (10-2) an early advantage. In left field in the bottom of the first, Aviu fully extended to snag a ball at the wall and rob UCLA of a solo homer.

The Oceanside, Calif., native then crushed a solo home run to left field to give the Sooners a 1-0 lead. It was her first homer of the season and just the fourth allowed by UCLA this year.

The Bruins went on top in the third as Aaliyah Jordan hit a two-out double with the bases loaded to score three.

After an error in the fourth, UCLA scored three unearned runs to grow its lead to five.

UCLA's Bubba Nickels homered with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, extending the Bruin advantage further.

Junior Mariah Lopez suffered her first loss of the year, moving to 5-1 in the circle. She allowed six runs, three of which were earned, on six hits while striking out six. Nicole Mendes spent 0.2 innings in relief, allowing one hit and walking one. Shannon Saile closed the final 1.2 frames, surrendering one hit and one run.

The Sooners continue the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Saturday as they take on No. 14/13 Arizona at 12 p.m. CT.
