NORMAN— The reigning national champion Oklahoma women's gymnastics team took the floor and showcased their 2020 routines at their annual intrasquad Friday night at the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center.
In a live meet setting with two judges per event, the Sooners previewed their new routines and skills on all four events. Senior
Maggie Nichols, junior
Anastasia Webb and freshman Ragan Smith competed in the all-around, with at least seven Sooners competing on each apparatus.
"So some things happened that we weren't expecting, so that's always fun when you're faced with diversity in the first competition," said head coach KJ Kindler. "Olivia (Trautman) had a little tweak on her foot on a leap and it wasn't worth it, so we lost an all-arounder. But, a lot of people stepping up and a lot of newcomers coming in for their first events."
The Sooners started the night on vault, featuring five 10.0 start value vaults. Webb had the highest score of the night on the apparatus with a 9.925 on her Yurchenko 1.5.
Sophomore
Allie Stern posted a score of 9.875 on her Yurchenko 1.5. Nichols and senior
Jade Degouveia tallied matching scores of 9.85 on their Yurchenko 1.5.
"We had Brooke (Weins) who started us off on vault with a nice clean full, then we had Evy (Schoepfer) do a tuck 1.5, that was exciting for her," said Kindler. "It's a new vault, it's a 10.00, we think she's definitely going to come around on that, but she stepped in. She stepped in in an alternate spot and did a really good job. Then Ragan debuting as the alternate on vault and did a nice full."
On bars, several new faces made an appearance in the lineup in Degouveia, Smith, junior
Jordan Draper and freshman Vanessa Deniz. Two-time national champion Nichols anchored with a meet-high 9.9.
"Vanessa stepped in and I was really proud with how aggressive she was, and mostly that she showed good confidence under that pressure," Kindler said. "That was exciting to see.
Jordan Draper has a 10.0 bar routine and she stepped in the alternate position and hit her bar routine a little rough during warm-up, but she got it together and really did a good job. Lots of new faces and of course all the old faces looked fantastic, too. I have to mention them, Maggie and Anastasia. Karrie started us off really well. Jade, we have not seen Jade and that bar routine is stunning. It's stunning. I think it has the chance to score a 10; there's really not much wrong with it. As long as she can get that dismount down, that landing, she'll be golden."
Following bars, the Sooners transitioned to beam. The beam lineup featured all three freshmen in Deniz, Smith and Brooke Weins. Nichols recorded the highest beam score of the night, notching a 9.875. Junior beam specialist
Carly Woodard posted a score of 9.85.
"And beam, beam was really excellent because Olivia is our starter, losing our starter on beam is like 'are you kidding me?'," Kindler said. "Karrie stepped in and is a very aggressive beam worker. I felt that she was good for that position, I went back and forth, but that aggressiveness paid off tonight. She had no bobbles, little rough on the dismount a little bit, maybe. Otherwise, an awesome start. You saw Vanessa, you saw Ragan, you saw three new people on beam who did an awesome job. Both freshmen really handling the pressure. No, you think 'oh it's intrasquad, there's not a lot of pressure' but there were three-hundred people basically sitting on the beams, sitting all over them. So, I think that is a lot of pressure. I think that to have that first moment for the team, that's where it matters for the team, to have it over with and done with. That's a more positive sign for the future. Then of course, all the usual's were wonderful. Carly, Anastasia, Maggie, all doing a great job. A lot of them showcasing new routines and new skills. Dismounts were kind of messy, but we'll fix that."
The night finished on floor where the Sooners showcased their new and exciting routines. Draper led off with a 9.825 while Nichols anchored with a 9.875. Deniz looked elegant in her floor debut, posting a 9.825.
"Then going to floor, it was fun to see their new choreography," Kindler said. "In all honesty, they were saving it up a little, saving it up a little on their dances, saving it up on the tumbling. Dance will get more expressive as we go. I was a little late on the choreography this year, so for some of them, it's brand new and they just need to get a little bit more comfortable. There's new faces there, too. Nice to see regular faces like Maggie out there again, having that whole year off last year of floor. Jade, looking really great. Those two seniors in the lineup are really helpful with leadership."
The Sooners will open the 2020 season at the Collegiate Challenge in Anaheim, Calif., where they will face UCLA, Cal and Stanford. The home slate opens on Jan. 20 at 1:30 p.m. CT. against Arkansas at Lloyd Noble Center. Fans can snag season tickets to catch every moment of OU's exciting home slate which also features contests against Iowa State (Jan. 31), West Virginia (Feb. 14), TWU (Feb. 14), Denver (Feb. 29) and Michigan (March 6). NCAA Regionals will also be held in Norman, April 2-4.
"I think we're in a really good place," Kindler said. "We're going to be on podium, which is going to be a little bit forgiving for that first meet. I'm happy for that, I'm sure everybody in the meet is. Just to have that lightness in the first competition. But I would say landings are something we need to focus on, dismounts, kind of seeing it a little bit better. Those tenths are going to add up and make a big difference in a meet like that. That competition is not going to be easy at all. Those are tough, tough teams in their own home state. We're just walking in like 'hey, we want to play, too.' We are going to have a lot of work to do, but I'm excited to do it. I'm excited to get everybody healthy and out there."
