NORMAN — Oklahoma senior cornerback Parnell Motley was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after leading OU's stout defensive effort in a 34-16 victory at No. 21 Oklahoma State on Saturday, the league office announced Monday.
Motley was all over the field, registering six tackles (five solo), two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, an interception and a pass breakup as the Sooners held the Cowboys to 335 yards (140 below OSU's season average). He recovered the first fumble he forced, which led to an OU touchdown and a 17-7 lead. Motley's fourth-quarter interception was his first of the season.
The Washington, D.C., product leads the Sooners with four forced fumbles this season and has a team-high 11 pass breakups. He has accounted for 34 total tackles (27 solo, one for loss). In 51 career games, Motley has six interceptions (most among current Sooners), five forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 31 pass breakups and 167 total tackles. His 31 career PBUs puts him fifth in school history.
This is Motley's first career weekly Big 12 honor. OU has earned three Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week awards (also Brendan Radley-Hiles on Sept. 9 and Kenneth Murray on Oct. 14), its most since 2015 (five that season).
Oklahoma has earned 11 Big 12 weekly awards this season. Jalen Hurts earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 3, Oct. 21 and Nov. 18, and was named Newcomer of the Week three times (Sept. 3, Sept. 30 and Oct. 14). CeeDee Lamb has earned Offensive Player of the Week honors twice (Oct. 14 and Nov. 11).
No. 6/6 Oklahoma (11-1, 8-1 Big 12) faces No. 8/8 Baylor (11-1, 8-1 Big 12) in the Big 12 Championship on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The game will be televised by ABC.
