Bower Wins Swiss Cup with Team USA

November 03, 2019 | Men's Gymnastics

NORMAN — University of Oklahoma alumnus and U.S. men's national team member Allan Bower won the 2019 Swiss Cup in Zurich, Switzerland, Sunday morning alongside fellow U.S. women's national team member, Jade Carey.

Bower and Carey worked together in the meet's bracketed elimination format to advance through three rounds, performing on events of their choosing, to win the cup by defeating Ukraine in the final round by over a point.

"I started on floor then did p-bars, pommel then went back to floor," explained Bower. "Me and Jade talked beforehand about which events we should do to get into the final round, so we had teamwork in that aspect."

Bower tallied solid scores on floor exercise (14.100) and parallel bars (14.200) in the first two rounds of the meet, paired with scores of 14.600 and 13.550 from Carey on vault and uneven bars, respectively. The two advanced into the semifinals with a combined score of 56.450 to compete against Germany, Switzerland and Ukraine.

In the semis, Bower hit a strong pommel horse set to record a 14.300, while Carey scored 12.950 on balance beam for a combined total of 27.250. The score was second-best in the semifinal round and advanced Team USA into finals to match up against Ukraine.

Bower chose to compete on floor exercise again in the finals, tallying an impressive 14.450 paired with Carey's 14.625 vault to tally a first-place score of 29.075 for the U.S. Ukrainian gymnasts totaled a final-round 27.650 to place second.

"Once we started competing, we just had fun," continued Bower. "It was just like another day in the gym. It was probably one of the most packed meets I've ever been to. There was probably close to 7,000 people there so that was really cool."

"We worked really well together and kept our spirits high and just had a good time." - Allan Bower

Bower's four 14-plus scores helped the U.S. secure its first Swiss Cup win since 1991 when Shannon Miller and Scott Keswick won the meet.

Also representing OU and Team USA in Switzerland as Bower's coach was current OU assistant coach Josh Yee. The meet was Yee's international coaching debut, alongside his former teammate at Oklahoma, Bower, from 2015-17.
