November 21, 2019 | Football

NORMAN — University of Oklahoma senior quarterback Jalen Hurts and junior wide receiver CeeDee Lamb were named semifinalists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, it was announced Thursday afternoon by the Walter Camp Foundation.

Hurts and Lamb are among the 20 "Players to Watch" for the award, and OU is one of four programs with multiple semifinalists. LSU and Ohio State also have two each and Clemson has three. The Walter Camp Player of the Year is voted on by the 130 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors. A list of five finalists will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 5, and the winner announced on ESPN SportsCenter on Thursday, Dec. 12.

The OU duo has combined to lead the most prolific offense in the country this season. The Sooners lead the nation in total offense (581.1 yards per game), yards per play (8.8), passing efficiency (201.7 rating) and yards per pass attempt (11.7), and are third in scoring offense (47.0 points per game) and yards per rush (6.5).

Hurts, already a semifinalist for the Maxwell, the Davey O'Brien and the Earl Campbell awards and a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, leads the nation in passing efficiency rating (209.1; the single-season FBS record is 199.4), yards per pass attempt (12.3; the FBS record is 11.6), yards per completion (16.8) and points responsible for per game (26.0) and ranks second in total offense (402.2 ypg) and third in completion percentage (73.0). He averages 303.9 passing yards and 98.3 rushing yards per contest and has accounted for 43 total touchdowns.

The Houston, Texas, product is the only FBS player since 1996 to post a passing efficiency rating of 245.0 or better five times in the same season (minimum 15 attempts), and the only player to do so more than three times. Hurts is also the only FBS player with three games this season of two-plus rushing touchdowns and two-plus passing TDs. He was named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Player of the Week on Sept. 4 and Nov. 19.

Lamb, a semifinalist for the Maxwell, Biletnikoff and Earl Campbell awards and a consensus first-team midseason All-American, is tied for second nationally with 13 receiving touchdowns and ranks ninth with his 109.2 receiving yards per game despite ranking 75th with just 4.9 catches per contest. He also ranks fourth nationally with 22.3 yards per reception and is 12th with 983 receiving yards.

The Richmond, Texas, product has produced at least one TD reception in eight of his nine games this season and is the only Power Five player who has at least five games of 135-plus receiving yards. He also leads the nation's non-seniors with his 31 career receiving TDs and 2,948 receiving yards.

The 2018 Player of the Year will be recognized along with the Walter Camp All-America team at the Foundation's national awards dinner on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, at Yale University's Lanman Center.

Walter Camp, "The Father of American football," first selected an All-America team in 1889. A former Yale University athlete and football coach, Camp is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to 11 men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and continue the tradition of selecting an annual All-America team.
