November 18, 2019 | Football

NORMAN — Oklahoma has been named the Reveal Suits National Team of the Week after its thrilling come-from-behind 34-31 victory at No. 12 Baylor on Saturday, the Football Writers Association of America announced Monday. The FWAA's All-America Committee selects the weekly winner and all Division I FBS and FCS schools are eligible to be selected.

The Sooners trailed Baylor 28-3 midway through the second quarter before pulling off the largest comeback victory in program history to hand the Bears (9-1) their first loss of the season and end their 11-game winning streak. According to ESPN Stats & Info, OU's 21-point halftime deficit (31-10) is the largest overcome to defeat an FBS team that entered the game 9-0 or better since NCAA classification began in 1937. OU also became the first team to ever beat a CFP-ranked team when trailing by 25 or more points. Teams had been a combined 0-162 since the CFP began in 2014.

In the second half, OU ran 58 plays to Baylor's 16, outgained the Bears by 310 yards (368-58), had 18 more first downs (22-4) and held a 24:20-5:40 advantage in time of possession. The Sooners' first two takeaways since the fourth game of the season (Sept. 28 vs. Texas Tech) came during their second-half rally. Safety Pat Fields recovered a fumble forced by cornerback Parnell Motley on Baylor's first play of the third quarter, and linebacker Nik Bonitto sealed the victory with an interception at the OU 38-yard line with 29 seconds left.

Jalen Hurts accounted for 411 yards of offense, including a school-record 305 in the second half, to earn Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors. He was 30 for 42 through the air (both season highs) for 297 yards and a career-high-tying four touchdowns. The senior also ran a season-high 27 times for 114 yards.

Hurts completed passes to 10 different receivers, and several players stepped up to fill in for Biletnikoff Award semifinalist CeeDee Lamb, who missed the game due a medical issue. Freshman tight end Austin Stogner made his first two touchdown catches (5-yarder in the second quarter and 3-yarder in the third quarter) and freshman receiver Theo Wease registered his second touchdown reception of the year on a 19-yard play in the fourth quarter. Sophomore H-back Brayden Willis notched his first career TD reception with 5:25 remaining to tie the game at 31, and senior receiver Lee Morris tallied a career-high seven catches for 86 yards. All five of Morris' third-quarter catches went for first downs.

Redshirt freshman kicker Gabe Brkic was 2 for 2 on field goals, including the game-winning 31-yarder with 1:45 to go. Redshirt sophomore Kennedy Brooks rushed 18 times for 93 yards and caught a career-high four passes for 22 yards.

Junior linebacker Kenneth Murray led the Sooners with eight tackles, which included 2.0 for loss, to help them to their 19th consecutive November win going back to 2014. Sophomore defensive lineman Ronnie Perkins finished with 4.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. It was the most sacks by a Sooner since 2015 when Charles Tapper had 3.0 at Kansas.

This is the seventh time OU has earned the Team of the Week honor and first since 2017 following its win at Ohio State. The FWAA began recognizing a national team of the week in 2002.
