NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics program welcomed four signees from the 2020 recruiting class in the early signing period beginning Wednesday.
Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams and the Sooners signed Zachary Nunez and Daniel Simmons from the Houston area and Cypress Academy of Gymnastics. The Sooners also brought in Noah Giordano from Castle Rock, Colo. (5280 Gymnastics) and Tyler Selvaggi out of Buffalo Grove, Ill. (Buffalo Grove Gymnastics Center).
OU head coach Mark Williams on Giordano:
"Noah's got a tremendous amount of talent that so far, having come up in the 5280 program, has allowed him to do kind of do everything necessary to be a good NCAA gymnast and contributor to our team immediately. I think he's going to be fun to work with, smart kid and has a lot of potential. Coming from a program that Yul Moldauer came from, excited to have him as well as the other four guys. I think we've done pretty well in our recruiting class."
OU head coach Mark Williams on Nunez:
"Zach is pretty good on every event, needs to mature a little bit physically. He could be one of those diamonds in the rough where as he gets a little stronger, his gymnastics improves. Looking forward to developing him beyond the good basics that he has into some higher level gymnastics. Hoping to be a guy that can make the U.S. championships as a senior fairly quickly."
OU head coach Mark Williams on Selvaggi:
"Tyler comes from another gym that we've had some good prospects in the past. Tyler's kind of a dark horse. He battled some injuries his senior year so wasn't particularly well known but has some really good parallel bars and some strengths on the other apparatuses, so we're hoping that we can coach him up and make him an immediate contributor for us next year."
2019 U.S. Gymnastics Championships - 11th-PH; 10th-SR; 18th-AA (17-18)
OU head coach Mark Williams on Simmons:
"Daniel's going to be a guy who understands the process of training, having been from Cypress. His stronger events look to be floor and vault. Hopefully we can get him strong on rings and also contend to be in a position in the all-around."
