NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's basketball team (2-0) held on against a talented UAB (1-1) roster Sunday to squeeze out an 82-75 victory to advance to the Preseason
WNIT semifinals.
"UAB is a very good basketball team," said head coach Sherri
Coale. "They have good players, they have experienced players, they have a terrific coach. It was a great experience for our young team to be in that situation. I thought we adhered to the game playing beautifully in the first half. Second half, they sucked us into the way they wanted to play and it's a really hard thing to fight."
"They really test the layers of your man-to-man defense and I thought we responded well. I thought after they made the run our poise and our growing maturity was revealed. We just were solid down the stretch. Got a little out of sync offensively in the fourth quarter but just solid down the stretch ... That's going to be an important win four our team. [UAB is] a team that won 26 games last year and they got every back, so that's a good basketball team to beat."
The dynamic duo of
Madi Williams and Ana
Llanusa led the way for the Sooners.
Llanusa poured in 25 points and pulled down eight rebounds while the sophomore Williams also set a new career-high with 24 points and 13 boards.
Taylor Robertson also added a cool 17 points in the win.
"Now I'm starting to get a feel for what it is like to be able to do something like that," said Williams of her second consecutive double-double. "I think it is going to be a really good thing for my team to be able to keep playing like that. If that's what I need to do, that's what I am going to do."
Defensively, Oklahoma limited the sharp-shooting Blazers in check for most of the afternoon. Facing the NCAA active career leader in three-pointers made, the Sooners held Rachael Childress to 0-6 shooting from beyond the arc.
"I just love defense right now," said
Llanusa, who picked up a career-high eight steals. "I think I really fed off of
Madi (Williams) and (
Taylor Robertson) today.
Madi was going crazy today with every part of offense, defense, both ways. I think I really fed off of her and it just came."
UAB outscored Oklahoma 24-16 in the fourth quarter but its run fell just short.
Miyah Barnes complemented her 11-point effort in round one with a game-high 25 points against Oklahoma. Senior
Trista Magee (14 points) and sophomore
Imani Johnson (13 points) also finished in double figures.
Oklahoma will host Missouri State in the semifinal matchup on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT. on FSOK.
