OU Announces Change in Soccer Program

November 01, 2019 | Soccer

NORMAN — University of Oklahoma Vice President and Athletics Director Joe Castiglione and head soccer coach Matt Potter announced Friday that the 2019 season will be Potter's last at OU.

Potter has guided the Sooners to an 8-8-3 record this season and a berth in the Big 12 Championship, which starts Sunday in Kansas City, Mo., when Oklahoma takes on Oklahoma State at 11:30 a.m. CT. In his eighth year at OU, he owns a 63-76-23 record, and he has produced four first-team All-Big 12 selections and six second-team honorees. His players have also been named to the Academic All-Big 12 team 80 times.

"I'm grateful to Joe Castiglione for the opportunity to lead the program," said Potter, who will finish the season. "I want to thank the coaching and support staffs, and most importantly the student-athletes I've had the privilege to meet and work alongside. I leave knowing the program is in a great place and that it will continue the department's tradition of striving to compete for championships. I look forward to watching the program grow and supporting it from afar."

Castiglione said he is grateful for Potter's dedication to OU over the last eight years.

"I'm very thankful to Matt for all of the contributions he and his staff have made to our soccer program," commented Castiglione. "I wish nothing but the best for him and for his family."

OU's best three seasons under Potter came in succession. From 2014 to 2016, the Sooners posted a 34-23-9 mark. Potter's 2014 team went 10-9-4 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament, the 2015 squad finished 10-7-3, and he led the 2016 team to a 14-7-2 mark (a school record for wins) and to the program's first NCAA tourney victory.

Prior to his arrival in Norman, Potter transformed Washington State's program into one of the Pac-12's elite with a school-record 88 wins in nine seasons (88-69-26 overall record), including five double-digit-win campaigns and three NCAA Tournament appearances. He was also the head coach for the women's team at Scottsdale Community College in 2002, leading the Artichokes to a 9-7-1 record and to the 2002 Arizona Community College Athletic Conference playoffs.

From Mere, England, Potter graduated from West London College of Brunel University in 1992 with an honors degree in physical education and religious, social and moral education. In 1991, he helped lead West London to the National British College title.
