Halloween Game Set for October 30

October 09, 2019 | Baseball, Softball

NORMAN – For the third straight year, the Oklahoma baseball and softball teams will team up to host a Halloween Game at Marita Hynes Field on Wednesday, Oct. 30.

Once again, the two Sooner programs have launched a fundraising campaign with the Vs. Cancer Foundation to support The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center. The fundraiser will culminate with the intrasquad scrimmage, which will again be played in costume.

"We really look forward to the Halloween Game every year," head baseball coach Skip Johnson said. "We're excited to team with the softball program again to help children in need while holding this fun event that our student-athletes and fans enjoy. We have a great relationship with the Vs. Cancer Foundation and OU Children's Hospital, and we're looking forward to the community coming out to help support a great cause."

The 2019 Halloween Game will start at 6:30 p.m. with gates opening at 5:30. Prior to the game, a BOOmer Fest carnival will be held at Reaves Park, across the street from Marita Hynes Field, featuring games, food trucks music and prizes. The carnival, which is hosted by the Student-Athlete Innovative Leaders (SAIL), will open at 5 p.m.

Admission to both the game and the carnival is free, and all fans are encouraged to attend in costume; additional information on costumes is available below. Kids attending the game in costume will have the opportunity to trick-or-treat at the field and meet the OU student-athletes from both teams. All children in attendance will be welcomed on to the field for a post-game group photo opportunity. Additionally, there will be free face painting at the event.

Last year, the Sooners raised more than $15,000 for OU Children's for the Halloween Game, including $2,350 donated by Landers Auto Group. As in 2018, Landers will donate $50 per homer during the home run derby following the game.

Overall, Oklahoma baseball and softball have raised over $112,000 for Vs. Cancer and OU Children's since 2014. OU baseball teamed with Vs. Cancer in its "Shave for the Brave" campaign from 2014-16, raising more than $80,000 to benefit the foundation's research to eliminate childhood cancers and the OU Children's Hospital.

"We're thrilled to be a part of the Halloween Game again this year," head softball coach Patty Gasso said. "Giving back to our community is very important to this program, and this event is an excellent way to help the OU Children's Hospital. We encourage fans to join us and the baseball team at Marita Hynes Field to support this great cause."

This marks the third straight year and fourth overall that the Sooner sluggers have hosted a joint Halloween Game. The game originated in 2013 at baseball's L. Dale Mitchell Park and evolved with the inclusion of OU softball, which has hosted the game in 2015, 2017 and 2018.
