Softball Opens Fall with Pair of Shutouts

NORMAN – The Oklahoma softball team kicked off the 2019 fall season with two run-rule victories Friday night as it took down Trinity Valley CC and Seward County CC. The Sooners shut out Trinity Valley CC 18-0 before powering past Seward County CC 13-0.

OU 18, Trinity Valley CC 0 (5 innings)

Pitchers Shannon Saile and Brooke Vestal combined to strike out 11 batters, surrendering no runs on two hits by TVCC. Saile tossed three innings and Vestal pitched two.

OU opened the scoring with six runs in the first, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple from junior transfer Taylon Snow.

After the second inning went scoreless, Jocelyn Alo launched a three-run homer over the left field fence on the first pitch to make it a 9-0 game. Grace Green followed Alo with a solo homer of her own to make it 10-0 Sooners.  

Four OU players combined to drive in eight more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Rylie Boone singled to left to score two before Alycia Flores drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Raylee Pogue. Kinsey Koeltzow doubled to send two runners home and Alanna Thiede singled to drive in another. Mackenzie Donihoo smacked a two-run double for the 18-0 Sooners win.

OU 13, SEWARD COUNTY CC 0 (5 innings)

OU earned its second run-rule shutout of the day as it flew past Seward County CC 13-0. Freshman trio Macy McAdoo, Olivia Rains and Thiede struck out six batters and gave up just one hit in the contest.

The Sooners scored all 13 of their runs in the second inning. Donihoo blasted a three-run double to kick things off. The freshman crossed the plate on a throwing error to make it 4-0. Boone tacked on two more runs as she hammered a double to center for a 6-0 lead.

Snow singled to send Boone home, then Snow beat a throw to the plate to score. Donihoo blasted another single to left field to drive in Alo for a 9-0 advantage.

Flores advanced on a throwing error before Kinsey Koeltzow singled to drive in another run.  Pogue then launched a two-run homer over the left field wall to give OU a 13-0 lead.

Up Next

OU is back in action Saturday to close out the Fall Festival. The Sooners take on Seminole State at 12:15 p.m. CT and Connors State at 2:30 p.m.

During the Fall Festival, the Sooners are holding a food drive for the OU Food Pantry. Fans are encouraged to bring the following items to donate at the gate: pasta, pasta sauce, canned fruit, juice boxes, condiments, canned soup, Thanksgiving items (e.g. stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce), canned vegetables (except for corn and green beans), mac and cheese, beans, rice, peanut butter, granola bars, and mixes such as cake or pancake mix. 

Fans will receive free Whataburger coupons with food donations.
