NORMAN – University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics alumnus Allan Bower is set to compete in Zurich, Switzerland, this weekend for Team USA at the 2019 Swiss Cup.
Bower and OU assistant coach Josh Yee, serving as Bower's personal coach for Team USA, will represent the U.S. alongside women's national team member Jade Carey. The meet is set up in a unique team format, featuring a bracketed elimination system. The gymnasts have the ability to choose which events they would like to compete. The one-day competition will begin Sunday at 5:30 a.m. CT, 11:30 a.m. local time in Switzerland.
"I am excited to go compete," said Bower, current U.S. National Team member. "There are routines that I have been working on the last couple of months that I'm ready to compete. I am excited to go with Josh as my coach. He was my teammate here, so it is going to be fun having him coach me out there. We are going to do a little sight-seeing and enjoy the entire experience competing for Team USA."
After the first two rotations, the bottom two countries will be eliminated and the third rotation will serve as the semifinals between four countries prior to the finale where the winners of the four-country semifinals will compete for the top two spots, while the other two countries vie for third and fourth. Each respective country's gymnasts will perform one after another and judges will combine their scores to be totaled for the final tally.
Yee, Bower's teammate at OU from 2015-17, will make his international coaching debut for Team USA. The Hawaii native and NCAA All-American looks forward to the opportunity to coach his former teammate.
"It's definitely interesting," said Yee. "I think it works really well because we both understand each other because we have worked together for so long.
"Me and Allan have known each other since we were little kids, so not only were we teammates but we have grown up with each other. It is really cool to have that relationship and come back now and be his coach." - Josh Yee
"I'm excited to be around that level of gymnastics and I'm excited for Allan. Ever since he has gotten back from Worlds, he has been super motivated and has been working hard every single day. He always shows up and is prepared, clean and consistent. I am excited to see him have a good performance out there on the world stage."
