NORMAN — University of Oklahoma head softball coach
Patty Gasso has announced that senior outfielder
Nicole Mendes will miss a portion of the 2020 season due to a torn ACL.
"Nicole has such a strong mentality and work ethic, and she's doing everything she can do to get back on the field as quickly as possible," said Gasso. "The hope is that she'll be able to return to game action sometime in March."
A key contributor each of her first three seasons at OU, Mendes has started 160 of her 179 career games and owns a .357 batting average with 18 doubles, 12 triples, 13 home runs, 78 RBIs and 41 stolen bases. She's also made 27 appearances in the circle (34.0 innings pitched) and has a 2-0 record and a 2.47 ERA.
Mendes, from Houston, was the 2017 Big 12 Freshman of the Year when she hit .408 with career highs of eight doubles and seven homers, and recorded a 0.75 ERA in 18.2 innings pitched.
She was named to the Women's College World Series All-Tournament Team in 2017 and 2019, and is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree.
