Hurts Earns Second Big 12 Offensive Honor

October 21, 2019 | Football

NORMAN — Oklahoma senior quarterback Jalen Hurts was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Sooners to a 52-14 win over West Virginia on Saturday, the league office announced today.

The Houston, Texas, product completed 16 of 17 pass attempts for 316 yards and three touchdowns (no interceptions) and rushed 10 times for 75 yards and two scores. Hurts, who exited the game for good after the first play of the fourth quarter, became just the third OU quarterback (and first against a conference opponent) to complete at least 90 percent of his passes, throw for over 300 yards and throw for at least three TDs. He also recorded a career-high passing efficiency rating of 308.5, which is the best mark nationally this season and the second-best figure in school history (minimum 15 attempts).

Hurts is the only quarterback in the nation this season to have three games in which he has recorded least two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns. Saturday was the second game this year in which he has accounted for at least five touchdowns (six against Houston). He has posted a rating of at least 245.0 in five games and is the only FBS player since at least 1996 to record more than three such outings in a season (minimum 15 attempts).

This is Hurts' second Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honor (Sept. 3) and his fifth Big 12 weekly honor overall (has earned Newcomer of the Week three times). It is OU's eighth Big 12 weekly honor this season. Brendan Radley-Hiles (Sept. 9) and Kenneth Murray (Oct. 14) were named Big 12 Defensive Players of the Week and CeeDee Lamb was the Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 14.

No. 5/5 Oklahoma (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) travels to face Kansas State on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT in Manhattan, Kan. The Sooners have won 22 consecutive true road games, good for the second-longest streak nationally since at least World War II.
