Men's Gym Unveils 2020 Schedule

October 17, 2019 | Men's Gymnastics

NORMAN – Highlighted by challenging trips to Stanford, Michigan, Ohio State and the annual Rocky Mountain Open, University of Oklahoma Vice President and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione and head coach Mark Williams announced the 2020 Oklahoma men's gymnastics schedule Thursday afternoon.

The Sooners will open their 2020 campaign in Colorado Springs, Colo., with the Rocky Mountain Open, hosted by the Air Force Academy. Along with the Falcons, OU will face third-place finisher at NCAAs last year, Nebraska, and Minnesota at the meet.

"We start off with the Rocky Mountain Open as we always do in January," said Williams. "It will end up being a qualifier for the guys going to the Winter Cup, but it will be our first opportunity to compete against our usual teams of Air Force, Nebraska and Minnesota.

"That should tell us a lot about how we are doing relative to some of the good teams. We'll try to use that as a starting point for our season with a different team and younger group."

OU will stay on the road for the month of January for trips to Columbus, Ohio, on Jan. 18 to face Ohio State and Arizona State, and Palo Alto, Calif., to face off against the defending national champion Stanford Cardinal and California Golden Bears on Jan. 25.

"We have fewer home meets on the schedule this year but we expect to put out a great team and look forward to the challenge of a new season." - Mark WilliamsĀ

The 2020 home opener at McCasland Field House in Norman will see the Sooners go against the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday, Feb. 8, tentatively scheduled as the team's annual 'Cleveland Night' in partnership with Cleveland Elementary School in Norman.

"We get our first opportunity to come home against Iowa," Williams continued. "I expect that to be our Cleveland night. That should be an exciting event after having a month on the road."

Following the Sooners home opener, the team will hit the road once more for a battle against 2019 fourth-place finisher Michigan on Feb. 15.

Individuals who qualify for the USA Gymnastics Winter Cup meet will compete in Las Vegas, Feb 21-22. At last year's Winter Cup, 13 Sooners competed with then-senior Yul Moldauer taking the all-around crown and four current or former OU gymnasts being named to the U.S. Senior Men's National Team.

Oklahoma will return to the friendly confines of McCasland Field House in the month of March for their final two home meets versus Air Force (March 13) and Cal (March 21). The regular season finale against Cal will serve as senior night for the Sooners three seniors: Tanner Justus, Grant Kell and Collyn Kellogg.

The Sooners will begin the postseason on April 4 in Colorado Springs, Colo., as the Air Force Academy will host the MPSF Championship. OU will look to secure it's ninth consecutive conference championship over AFA, Cal and Stanford.

Following the conference championship, teams will take a two-week break in preparation for the 2020 NCAA Championships held this season in Ann Arbor, Mich., on the campus of the University of Michigan.

The team qualifier will take place on April 17 prior to the team finals on April 18. OU has won four of the past five NCAA Championships and brought home 11 All-America honors in 2019 at the championships in Champaign, Ill.

Season tickets for the Sooners three home meets in 2020 go on sale next Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. CT. Single-meet tickets will be available for purchase on Nov. 19.Ā

The Sooners will host their annual Red-White intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 1 p.m. CT. The scrimmage will be held at the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center at 325 W Imhoff Street in Norman and is open to the public and free admission.
