AMES, Iowa – The Oklahoma wrestling team fell to No. 15 Iowa State 25-6 Friday inside Hilton Coliseum.
Two Sooners picked up wins in the contest. At 149 pounds, senior Davion Jeffries got an upset victory over No. 12 Jarret Degan 12-5. In the first period, Jeffries scored two takedowns and an escape to take a 5-2 lead into the second. The Sooner did not score in the second, but Degan got an escape to cut Jeffries lead to 5-3. Jeffries answered in the final period, adding an escape, a takedown and a four-point nearfall to close out the bout.
With that victory, Jeffries extends his winning streak to four matches.
In the 157 bout, Justin Thomas defeated the Cyclones' Chase Straw 9-7. Thomas got off to a hot start with two takedowns and a four-point nearfall to open the bout with a 6-2 lead after Straw escaped twice. Thomas started the second on bottom and got a quick escape to go up 7-2. In the final period, Straw cut the Sooner's lead to 7-5 when he escaped and got a takedown. Thomas escaped before Straw got another takedown to keep his lead at 8-5. Straw took Thomas down to come within a point, but once more, Thomas escaped and rode Straw out to win 9-7.
In the 125 pounds bout, Christian Moody was defeated by ISU's Alex Mackall 10-4. At 133, Anthony Madrigal dropped to No. 9 Austin Gomez 8-2.
In a battle of top-15 opponents, No. 11 Dom Demas narrowly fell to No. 14 Ian Parker 4-3 after a sudden victory overtime. OU's Hayden Hansen was defeated by Logan Schumacher 5-0 in the 165 bout. At 174, Anthony Mantanona dropped to Marcus Coleman 17-14.
Kayne MacCallum (184) was defeated by No. 19 Samuel Colbray, 14-4. At 197, Jake Woodley suffered a narrow, 6-5 loss to No. 6 William Miklus after a sudden victory overtime. In the final bout of the night, Jake Boyd dropped to ISU's Gannon Gremmel, 6-1.
