NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Oklahoma women's tennis team earned a berth in the ITA Kickoff Weekend championship with a 4-0 victory over Winthrop.
The Sooners will play for a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships at 1 p.m. tomorrow. OU awaits the winner of Vanderbilt-Memphis.
"We came out ready to battle today because we knew this was going to be a tough dual match against an experienced Winthrop team," said head coach Audra Cohen.
"I'm really proud of how well we fought on every court. We accepted the challenge and got to work. Ivana (Corley) and Camila (Romero) stepped up their focus and confidently finished their matches. Then Martina (Capurrro) played with immense heart and was able to push their match to the third. (Oleksandra Korashvili) and Jasmine (Asghar) were in wars and still fighting, and that gave our freshman Kianah (Motosno) a lot of energy to clinch the match."
OU (3-0) won the doubles point to open the match. On court two, Camila Romero and Martina Capurro got the Sooners off to a hot start when they shut out Winthrop's Alisa Soloveva and Rafaela Santos 6-0 in just 25 minutes.
Jasmine Asghar and Ivana Corley were defeated by No. 22 Lauren Proctor and Megan Kauffman 6-4 at the top spot.
The point came down to court three, where Kianah Motosono and Oleksandra Korashvili downed Tayla Van Eck and Ellie Burns. The duo broke for a 3-2 lead before Van Eck and Burns tied things again at 3-all, but the Sooners won the next three games to capture the doubles point for OU.
In singles, Corley cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Van Eck to give the Sooners a 2-0 lead in the match.
On court three, Romero downed Kauffman 6-2, 6-4. The Sooner controlled the first frame, taking a 3-0 lead early. In the second, Romero and Kauffman tied at every game up to 4-all before Romero ran away with it.
Freshman Motosono clinched the match for OU with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ellie Burns at the No. 6 line.
When play was halted, Capurro was locked in a third-set battle with No. 66 Proctor on court one, trailing 4-3. Capurro gave up the first set 6-2 before surging back to take the second. The Sooner held on to win after a wild tiebreaker, 7-6 (6). Capurro trailed 6-4 in the breaker, but staved off match points to take the lead and win the frame to send her court to a deciding set.
Korashvili was tied at 5-5 in the third set against Soloveva on court two. The Sooner won the first frame 6-1 before Soloveva captured an extended second, 7-5.
At the No. 4 spot, Asghar was about to start a third-set tiebreaker with Santos. Asghar took the first 6-4, but Santos won the second 6-4 to force a final frame.
The Sooners await the winner of No. 2 Vanderbilt and Memphis. First serve for the championship match is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
