Sooners Take No. 2 Vanderbilt to the Wire

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Oklahoma women's tennis team took No. 2 Vanderbilt to the wire Saturday in the ITA Kickoff Championship, narrowly falling to the Commodores 4-3.

"I'm proud of how hard we fought today - we battled for every point in singles and doubles," said head coach Audra Cohen. "In the fall we spoke a lot about being accountable to a very high standard, and today's match showed why that standard is important."

"As the season progresses, we must continue to work hard and become stronger competitors because we have a lot of opportunities this season against top teams."

The Sooners claimed the doubles point in a thriller. Jasmine Asghar and Ivana Corley took down Fernanda Contreras and Emily Smith 7-5 to get things started for the Sooners.

On court two, Martina Capurro and Camila Romero suffered a 7-5 loss to No. 26 Christina Rosca and Summer Dvorak.

Oleksandra Korashvili and Kianah Motosono clinched the point for OU with a 7-6 (5) victory over Emma Kurtz and Georgia Drummy. In the breaker, the Sooners took a 4-1 lead before Vanderbilt fired back to tie it at 4-all. Korashvili fired off an ace to go up 5-4 and the Sooners went on to win the court and the point.

Asghar struck first for OU, giving up just two games to make quick work of No. 71 Carolyn Campana, 6-0, 6-2. With Asghar's victory, OU took a 2-0 lead in the match.

At No. 3, Romero was defeated by Drummy, 6-3, 6-4, but the Sooners maintained a 2-1 lead.

Capurro fell to ITA No. 6 Contreras after an extended second frame. Contereas took the first 6-2 before Capurro forced a breaker in the second, but Contreras prevailed 7-6 (6) to tie the match at 2-all.

OU regained the lead when Korashvili pulled off a three-set victory to upset No. 15 Rosca on court two. Korashvili dropped the first frame 6-4, but turned the tables in the following set to win it 6-1 and force one more. The junior held Rosca to just three games to win it 6-3 and put OU up 3-2.

Corley was defeated by Dvorak 7-6 (7), 6-2. In the first set, Corley trailed 5-3 before rallying to force a tiebreaker. Corley tied the breaker at every point up to six, but Dvorak came out on top.

With the match tied at 3-all, it came down to court six to decide the match. OU's Motosono fell to No. 42 Emily Smith, 6-2, 6-2.

OU heads to Arkansas on Feb. 3. The Sooners then return to the Headington Family Tennis Center on Feb. 9 to host Arizona State.
