OU Wraps Up Day One of Schooner Fall Classic

September 28, 2018 | Women's Golf

NORMAN - Oklahoma opened its weekend at home by shooting a 289 (+5) in the first round of the Schooner Fall Classic on Friday. The Sooners are in ninth place with 36 holes remaining at the par-71, 6,048-yard Belmar Golf Club in Norman.

"We had a tough day as a team," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "We played well on some of the most challenging holes on the course, but seemed to struggle on some easier ones. By focusing on the little things we can put together a good number tomorrow. We still have a lot of golf left and will need to capitalize on that."

The 15-team event is led by 2017 Schooner Fall Classic champion Alabama along with Texas, tied with a 12-under 272.

Five golfers in the field of 81 are tied for first at 66 (-5).

The Sooners were led by sophomore Kaitlin Milligan with an even-par 71. The Norman native fought back from a triple-bogey on the 14th hole to birdie two of her final three holes. Milligan sits in a tie for 22nd place and is two strokes out of the top 10.

Freshman Libby Winans, participating in just her second collegiate event, put together a 1-over 72, capped by a tap-in birdie on the final hole. The rookie is tied for 32nd place.

Sophomore Hannah Lee and senior Julienne Soo are tied for 40th after each shooting a 73 (+2). Sophomore Sydney Youngblood shot a 75 (+4).

Two additional Sooners are competing in the event as individuals and their performances will not impact Oklahoma's team score. Freshman Mikhaela Fortuna, making her collegiate debut, sunk three birdies to finish the round with a 2-under 69. The freshman is tied for 10th place while senior Karen Arimoto is close behind with a 72 (+1).

Oklahoma begins its second round on Saturday at 9 a.m. off of hole No. 1 and will be paired with golfers from Oregon and Wisconsin. Live scoring is available on SoonerSports.com.
