Sooners Impress On Day One Of U.S. Championships

NORMAN- Current and former members of the University of Oklahoma gymnastics program began competition Thursday at the 2018 U.S. Gymnastics Championships at T.D. Garden in Boston.
Three Sooners sit in the top 10 following the first day of senior-level competition, while incoming Sooners occupy two of the top three spots in the juniors elite competition. Allan Bower, a 2017 graduate, paces the OU representation in the senior level, in third place after an impressive 83.85 all-around performance. Bower had the third-best pommel horse score of the night, tallying a 14.80.
“Overall, very pleased with how all of our guys did,” said head coach Mark Williams. “Can't say enough about Allan Bower. Only a surprise if you weren't paying attention. He is an outstanding competitor.”
Oklahoma senior and 2017 U.S. all-around champion Yul Moldauer battled through a back injury most of the evening to a sixth-place spot in the all-around standings. Moldauer still managed to record the second-best score on vault (14.70) and third-best score on rings (14.40).
“Yul's has been dealing with a recurring back injury, exacerbated when he jammed it doing a high bar dismount last Friday," said Williams. "He's experiencing a tremendous amount of tightness, and, despite some pretty heroic efforts, it clearly
U.S. National Qualifier all-around champion and Oklahoma alum Colin Van Wicklen put together a solid showing to finish ninth in the all-around with a score of 81.650 heading into Saturday. Van Wicklen recorded the top score on high bar (13.95).
Five other past or present Sooners sit between 10th and 20th in the all-around standings. Senior Genki Suzuki holds
In his first senior nationals, junior Tanner Justus finished day one in 13th (80.75). Justus tied for the third best score on vault, posting a 14.45.
“Genki Suzuki was a little weak on rings after illness but did a great job. And how about Tanner Justus going 80+ at his first senior USAs,” Williams said after solid performances from the pair of Sooners.
Other current Sooners Gage Dyer (79.40) and Alexei Vernyi (78.55) are in 18th and 20th place, respectively, in the all-around after the first day of competition.
On day one of the juniors elite-level championships, OU incoming freshmen Vitaliy Guimaraes and Spencer Goodell finished the day second and third in the all-around, respectively. Guimaraes tallied a 78.55, while Goodell recorded 78.50. The newcomers tied for the highest score on floor, both putting up a 13.80. Guimaraes scored a big 14.45 on vault, the highest vault score of the day among the juniors. Goodell finished first on high bar (12.85) and second on rings (13.30).
The Sooners contingent returns to competition on Saturday for the final day of the men's championships. The juniors will begin at 9:30 a.m. CT with the seniors to follow at 3:30 p.m. The championships determine the men's and women's U.S. champions and U.S. National Teams for the junior and senior elite levels. The championships also will serve as part of the selection process for the U.S. Team for the 2018 World Championships.
The men's final day will air live on The Olympic Channel beginning at 2:30 p.m. CT and switch over to NBC for the conclusion of the men's senior championships at 3:30 p.m. Broadcast information can be found here.
