NORMAN –Four members of the top-ranked Oklahoma women's gymnastics team combined to capture a conference-high nine spots on the All-Big 12 Gymnastics team, the league announced Wednesday.
This season marks the 11th straight year that the Sooners have led the conference in All-Big 12 selections and it is the ninth consecutive season that the Sooners have earned at least nine all-conference selections.
The All-Big 12 squad consists of the conference gymnasts with the top three highest regional qualifying scores (RQS) on each event in addition to the top two all-around gymnasts.
Sophomore Maggie Nichols secured a league-best five awards to become just the second gymnast in conference history to earn All-Big 12 honors on all four events and the all-around in multiple seasons, joining Richelle Simpson (Nebraska 2003 and 2005). Nichols is the first gymnast to do so in back-to-back seasons. The sophomore is one of just six gymnasts to earn five Big 12 awards in one season, joining Maddie Karr (Denver, 2018), Sarah Shire (Missouri, 2010), Simpson, Kasie Tamayo (Oklahoma, 2004) and Betsy Hamm (Iowa State, 2000) as the competitors to accomplish the feat.
Junior Brenna Dowell picked up a pair of awards, bringing her career tally to six. Dowell was recognized on vault for the third consecutive season and picked up an honor on floor for the second time in her career.
Junior Nichole Lehrmann and freshman Anastasia Webb were also recognized by the conference. Lehrmann received a spot on the bars listing for the third straight year while Webb captured her first career honor with recognition on floor.
This weekend, postseason competition begins for Oklahoma as it heads to the Big 12 Championship, scheduled for 4 p.m. CT on Saturday inside Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.
The Sooners will be in pursuit of their seventh straight conference championship and 10th under Kindler. The meet, which will pit OU against No. 13 Denver, No. 25 West Virginia and Iowa State, will air through FloGymnastics (subscription required).
