TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 1 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team went into its top 10 showdown with No. 6 Alabama and came out victorious, defeating the Crimson Tide 197.925-197.150 Friday night at Coleman Coliseum. With a regional qualifying score (RQS) of 198.070 after tonight's victory, the Sooners have set an NCAA RQS record.
The Sooners recorded the higher team score on three of four events, leading the Tide on vault, bars and beam. OU also took home four event titles and had the top three all-around scores, led by sophomore Maggie Nichols' 39.800.
“Our mission tonight was to completely trust our training, be aggressive and go all out,” head coach K.J. Kindler said. “We did all that and more tonight. As a staff, we see it as one of our most successful outings. There were a lot of improvements across the board and the team's mentality was spot on from beginning to end.”
The Sooners started on bars, putting up a 49.475 in the first rotation of the night. Freshman Anastasia Webb competed in the leadoff spot for the first time, getting the Sooners on the right track with a 9.9. Sophomore Bre Showers made her debut in the bars lineup, showing off her impressive Shushunova for a career high 9.85.
“Anastasia ignited the competition by nailing her best bar routine of the season in the leadoff spot,” Kindler said. “She just keeps getting better. Bre has a unique bar routine and a beautiful line. Her addition to the lineup added diversity and a 'wow' factor.”
Senior Stefani Catour was steady as always, adding a 9.875 in the No. 3 spot. Junior Nichole Lehrmann tallied a 9.9 in the No. 5 spot, her tenth-straight meet with at least a 9.9 on the event. Lehrmann is the only OU gymnast who has put up a 9.9 or better on bars in every meet this season. Sophomore Maggie Nichols anchored the rotation with a team-best 9.95, her seventh score of 9.95 or better on bars this season.
With a 49.475-49.300 lead after one rotation, the Sooners moved to vault where they continued to extend their lead. OU put up a 49.525 on the event, tying their fourth-best score this season. Nichols anchored with her fifth perfect score of the season, 12th of her career and fourth on vault.
“Maggie's vault was spectacular,” Kindler said. “It was absolutely incredible and worth every bit of that perfect score.”
Alex Marks led off the rotation with a strong 9.850 on her Yurchenko full, followed by a 9.825 from Lehrmann. In the No. 3 spot, junior Brenna Dowell added a 9.925 on her powerful Yurchenko 1.5. Showers and Webb each added a 9.875 to help pace the Sooners to a score of 99.000 after two rotations.
OU added a 49.425 on floor, extending their lead to 148.425-147.575 after three rotations. The freshman duo of Webb and Evy Schoepfer led the Sooners with a pair of 9.9s. Schoepfer tied a career high on the event, entertaining the crowd with her energetic choreography.
“Evy made huge strides tonight on floor,” Kindler said. “The was a more focused performance for her with confident landings and great energy.”
Showers added a 9.875 in the No. 2 spot, followed by a 9.875 from Dowell. Nichols tallied a 9.875 in the anchor spot to close out the rotation.
Closing out the meet on beam, the Sooners added a 49.500 to bring their total to just shy of 198. Nichols anchored with a near perfect beam routine for a 9.975. Senior Natalie Brown was elegant and poised, tying her season high with a 9.9 in the No. 4 spot.
“It was nice to see Natalie's confidence surge tonight on beam” Kindler said. “She was both stunning and comfortable up there.”
Webb added a 9.9 as well, giving her a 39.575 in the all-around. Bre Showers tallied a 9.875, for an impressive 39.475 in her first ever all-around competition, while Lehrmann tallied a 9.875 in the No. 4 spot for a 39.175 all-around score.
The Sooners will wrap up their double weekend in Denton, Texas as they take on TWU Sunday, March 18, at 2 p.m.
