OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 1 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team topped No. 12 Nebraska 196.425-196.175 Friday night at the Perfect 10 Challenge at the Cox Convention Center. The Sooners delivered Nebraska its first loss of the season in front of an electric crowd.
OU posted the higher score on three of the four events, with a solid 49.525 on bars and a 49.475 on floor. Sophomore Maggie Nichols took home the all-around title with a 39.600 after a pair of 9.95s on both beam and floor.
“You have to focus on all of those positive turns, all the positive competition, the success that you had, and just being able to move forward,” OU head coach K.J. Kindler said.
The Sooners started on vault, putting up a 49.275. Junior Alex Marks tied her career high with a 9.9 in the No. 2 spot. Junior Brenna Dowell followed with a 9.9 of her own in the No. 3 spot, her fifth mark of 9.9 or higher this season. Nichols tallied a 9.875 on her Yurchenko 1.5. Freshman Evy Schoepfer was entered into the lineup last minute, scoring a 9.8 in her vault debut for Oklahoma.
OU started to get its groove back putting up a 49.525 on bars, its second highest bar score of the season. Senior Stefani Catour tied her career high with a 9.925 in the No. 3 spot. Junior Nicole Lehrmann and freshman Anastasia Webb each put up beautiful routines for matching scores of 9.925. Along with Nebraska's Taylor Houchin and Sienna Crouse, Catour, Lehrmann and Webb shared the event title. Dowell and senior AJ Jackson were solid for the Sooners in the second rotation with matching marks of 9.875. Competing in the all-around, Nichols added a 9.825 in the anchor spot
The Sooners had an uncharacteristic night on beam, putting up a 48.150. Nichols anchored with a strong 9.950 to take home the event title. Webb tallied a 9.850 in the No. 5 spot and Bre Showers added a 9.800 in the No. 2 spot.
OU ended on a high note, posting its third-best floor score of the season with a 49.475. Nichols took home the event title with a 9.950 in the No. 5 spot with a routine that entertained the crowd and had the fans cheering as she landed her powerful tumbling passes. Jackson, always a crowd favorite, put on a show in the anchor spot to secure a 9.925. Webb was phenomenal once again as she showed off her personality in her performance for a 9.900. Dowell and Showers added identical 9.85s to pace the Sooners as the No. 1 and No. 2 routines.
“I was super excited about floor,” Kindler said. “We've been trying to get that performance out of them all year. Back up against the wall and having the pressure… I think that they followed through really well and they were aggressive, which was our message to them. To go out there and be aggressive and that is what they did.”
The Sooners will be back in action at Lloyd Noble Center Friday, Feb. 23, for a Big 12 meet against West Virginia. It is slated for a 6:45 p.m. start.
