Strong Offense Powers Sooners Past WVU

NORMAN — Behind a season-high attack percentage, the Oklahoma volleyball team swept West Virginia on Saturday afternoon inside McCasland Field House.
The Sooners (12-8, 4-4 Big 12) earned their second straight-set victory of Big 12 play 25-18, 25-12, 25-18. OU registered a season-best .410 hitting percentage while holding the Mountaineers (9-12, 1-7 Big 12) at .082.
"I thought everything we'd gone back to working on in practice this week showed up," head coach Lindsey Gray-Walton said. "It was really exciting because killing the ball is something we've known we need to add into what our game already consists of, and we did that today."
OU out-killed WVU by a 49-29 clip, led by double-digit performances from Alyssa Enneking (17) and Paige Anderson (12). Sarah Sanders added nine kills on a team-best .600 attack percentage while Anderson hit .550.
Defensively, the Sooners totaled 51 digs to WVU's 35. Libero Keyton Kinley led the match with 21 while Morgan Miller added 10. Additionally, OU out-blocked West Virginia 6.0-3.0.
The first set featured 13 ties and three lead changes as the two teams went back and forth to open the match. With the period tied at 13-13, the Sooners scored six unanswered to take a 19-13 lead. They carried that advantage throughout the frame and took a 25-18 victory.
Oklahoma's offense used an explosive start in the second set, opening the period on a 9-0 run. In that span, Enneking and Anderson both tallied three kills and Sanders added one. Additionally, Sanders and Anderson combined on a pair of block assists.
Anderson and Enneking both finished the period with six kills while McLaughlin assisted on 15 of OU's 17 kills. The Sooners hit .500 in the second to clinch a 25-12 frame win.
Although the final frame saw a closer start, the Sooners quickly took a 10-5 lead. West Virginia used a timeout after a 4-0 run put OU up 19-10. Although the Mountaineers scored on eight of the next 12 opportunities, back-to-back kills from McLaughlin and Sanders clinched Oklahoma's win.
The Sooners go back on the road next week, traveling to Kansas State on Wednesday and Texas on Saturday. Both matches are scheduled for a 7 p.m. CT start.
