Martinez Earns Big 12 Player of the Week

IRVING, Texas – University of Oklahoma baseball senior catcher Renae Martinez (San Pedro, Calif.) has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon. Martinez helped guide the Sooners to a series win over No. 2 Texas Tech at L. Dale Mitchell Park this past weekend en route to his first career weekly honor.

Martinez hit .364 (4-for-11) and slugged .818 with a team-high six RBI. He went 1-for-3 with a season-high three RBI on a bases-clearing double in the Friday night opener; a 6-2 victory. Martinez homered on Sunday and went 2-for-4. In Sunday's finale, he was 1-for-4 with a two-run, two-out double in the bottom of the first. During the series, he threw out three of five potential base stealers.

On the season, Martinez is hitting .333 with seven doubles, four home runs, 23 RBI and 21 runs.

He is the third Big 12 weekly award winner this season; joining Pitcher of the Week Jake Irvin (2/21) and Newcomer of the Week Brylie Ware (3/13). Martinez is the first Sooner to earn Player of the Week since Cody Thomas (5/16/16).

Oklahoma is in action at home Tuesday night against intrastate rival Oral Roberts at 6:30 p.m.
