NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma baseball team wraps up its first fall season under head coach Skip Johnson with a five-game fall world series at L. Dale Mitchell Park beginning Monday, October 23 at 3 p.m. Singer, songwriter Toby Keith will be on hand for game one as an honorary Sooner coach for the afternoon. All games will be seven innings and are open to the public.
Game two of the series is set for October 24 at 3 p.m. Oklahoma then takes a break from its series to play its annual Halloween Game, which will take place on October 25 at 6:30 p.m. with the OU softball team at Marita Hynes Field.
The series resumes on October 27 for a night contest at 6:30 p.m. After an off day to take part in OU's Homecoming, Oklahoma begins the final leg of the series on October 29 at noon. The final game will take place at 3 p.m. on October 31.
The Sooners' fall roster includes 19 returning letterwinners and 15 newcomers. Among the top returners are All-Big 12 First Team selections Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas) and Brylie Ware (Sedgwick, Kan.), who also earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Walker hit .333 with eight home runs and 51 RBI and spent his summer playing for the Team USA Collegiate National Team. Ware hit .298 a year ago with five home runs and 31 RBI and .390 over the summer with the Wisconsin Woodchucks of the Northwoods League.
Oklahoma's pitching staff returns all 59 starts from last season, including Devon Perez (Ashburn, Va.) and Jake Irvin (Bloomington, Minn.), who anchored the Sooner rotation. Perez, a 20th round pick of the Los Angeles Angels this summer, opted to return to Norman for his senior year after posting a 6-2 record, 3.50 earned run average and 81 strikeouts in 64.1 innings. Irvin, who made two appearances for Team USA this summer, went 6-3 with a 3.53 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 71.1 innings last year.
Johnson released OU's 2018 regular season schedule last week, which begins Feb. 16 against Indiana at the Bash on the Beach Tournament hosted by Coastal Carolina. The Sooners' 2018 slate features 33 home games, 32 vs. 2017 NCAA participants and 21 against teams that finished in the RPI Top-50. Oklahoma is coming off 35-24 season, finishing third in the Big 12 and appearing in a NCAA Regional for the first time since 2013.
