NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team lost in five sets to Texas-San Antonio in the opening-match of the NIKE Invitational at McCasland Field House on Thursday night. The Sooners suffered their first setback of the season to fall to 7-1, while the Roadrunners improved to 4-3.
Oklahoma took the first set, 25-19, and went in front two sets to one with a 25-20 win in the third. UTSA evened the match with 25-20 and 26-24 wins in the second and fourth before claiming the fifth, 20-18.
“We needed to play a lot better in the fourth set,” said head coach Santiago Restrepo. “We did not play well and they took it to us. Once you go to five the match and go either way and that's what happened, the match bounced their way.”
For the match, the Sooners hit just .183, while the Roadrunners hit .229, and their errors outnumbered their kills in the critical-fourth set.
UTSA's Dajana Boskovic led all players with 29 kills on 64 total attacks with 17 digs and four blocks. Setter Jessica Waldrip dished out 51 assists and added 10 digs, while libero Shelby Williams picked up a match-high 29 digs.
Senior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) recorded her fifth double-double of the season on 16 kills and a career-high 19 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Enneking (League City, Texas) chipped in with a double-double of her own in a 13-kill, 12-dig effort and junior middle blocker Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) added 12 digs.
Sophomore setter Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) contributed 45 assists to the Sooner offense and redshirt-sophomore libero Rachel Manriquez (Edmond, Okla.) led the defense with 20 digs.
Oklahoma held a narrow edge in blocks at 12-11. Senior middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrollton, Texas) led the way for OU with eight; falling one shy of her career-high, and added nine kills.
The Sooners are back in action on Friday night at 7 p.m. against Ohio.
