McGreevy Qualifies for Western Amateur Match Play

NORMAN – University of Oklahoma men's golfer Max McGreevy advanced to match play competition at the 114th Western Amateur Championship after finishing tied for eighth on Thursday. The elite tournament is taking place at the par-71, 7,202-yard Knollwood Club in Lake Forest, Ill.

McGreevy, a rising senior at OU, bounced back from a rough start to finish the stoke play competition with a four-round 283 (-1). After carding a 77 (+6) in Tuesday's first round, McGreevy fired a 66 (-5) in Wednesday's second round to advance 102 places in the standings and make the first cut.

Thursday featured 36 holes of golf, and McGreevy remained consistent to tally a 71 (E) in the third round and a 69 (-2) in the fourth to claim a share of eighth.

“It was an unforgettable day on a tough golf course,” McGreevy said of his performance Thursday. “Being out there with my mother on the bag kept me calm, and she was a trooper the whole way. We talked on the back nine and said I needed to shoot three under on the back to get into match play, and it just so happens I did just that.

“I am so excited to be able to get to play in match play,” McGreevy continued, “and hopefully bring some hardware home with my momma on the bag!”

Out of the 156-player field, the top 16 finishers advanced into match play, which will begin Friday morning. McGreevy will face a familiar foe, University of Texas rising junior Doug Ghim, at 9:15 a.m. CT. The two last met at the 2016 NCAA match play semifinals with Ghim claiming their match.

“The Western Am is one of the most prestigious amateur events in golf,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “It has a long list of great champions, and Max has put himself in position to win some matches and see how far he can take it.”
