NORMAN — Coming off its ninth Big 12 title and a spot in the College Football Playoff, the Oklahoma football team is ranked third in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll. The organization released its preseason rankings Thursday.
This marks the eighth time in Bob Stoops' 18 seasons that OU has opened the season ranked third or higher in the annual preseason coaches poll, last doing so in 2014 when the Sooners also opened at No. 3. In all, Oklahoma has been ranked 20th or better in the preseason coaches poll in each of the past 17 seasons.
The Sooners are one of four Big 12 teams in this year's preseason Amway Coaches Poll. TCU is ranked No. 14, while Oklahoma State was placed at No. 19 and Baylor at No. 21. Texas is receiving 34 votes to come in at the No. 32 spot.
In addition to those conference foes, OU also faces No. 5 Ohio State and No. 13 Houston during the 2016 season.
Oklahoma, which held its first practice on Thursday, boasts nine players on the 2016 Preseason All-Big 12 Team in junior quarterback Baker Mayfield, who was chosen as the Offensive Player of the Year. He was joined by junior running back Samaje Perine, sophomore receiver Mark Andrews and sophomore tackle Orlando Brown on the offense. On the other side of the ball, OU was represented by senior linebacker Jordan Evans, junior defensive lineman Charles Walker, junior defensive backs Steven Parker and Jordan Thomas, and sophomore punter Austin Seibert.
OU opens the season by facing the 13th-ranked Cougars on Sept. 3 at 11 a.m. CT at NRG Stadium, home of the NFL's Houston Texans. The home season, inside the newly-renovated Gaylord Family — Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, begins Sept. 10 versus ULM at 6 p.m. CT.
