NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 victory over intrastate Oral Roberts in its season-opening match at McCasland Field House on Friday night. The Sooners, who won by scores of 25-20, 25-12 and 25-17, hit a collective .300 in a balanced attack as they won their sixth straight home opener.
“It's the first match of the season; a new era, new things, we finally settled down and did a good job,” opened head coach Santiago Restrepo, who began his 13th season at the helm of the program. “The score was 25-20 in the first, but it was 19-18 and finally we settled down and got reorganized.”
OU closed out the first on a 6-2 run with kills from five different players. The Sooners would take the next two in convincing fashion as they held the Golden Eagles to hitting percentages of .028 and .000 in the second and third sets.
Five players tallied five kills or more for Oklahoma with senior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) leading the way with 10 on a .450 hitting percentage. She was also second on the team with nine digs to go with a pair of block assists.
Redshirt-senior outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) and senior middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrollton, Texas) added six kills apiece. Ward hit .455 with a pair of service aces. Junior middle blocker Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) led all players with six blocks, including two solo, while adding five kills.
Outside hitter Laura Milos led the Golden Eagles' attach with a match-high 15 kills. Tori Roe and Lucija Nojanjac, who had 28 assists, each reached double figures in digs with 10.
Sophomore setter Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) paced the OU offense with 28 assists and added seven digs on the defensive side of the ball. Redshirt-sophomore Rachel Manriquez (Edmond, Okla.) led the defense with 11 digs.
The Sooners are in action twice on Saturday with the action beginning at 12 p.m. against UTEP before capping off the weekend against UMKC at 7 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on FOX College Sports-Central and on KREF 1400 AM.
